Icon5 Schutzhund?

My friend told me to get my dogs into schutzhund when they get older... I just want your opinion, should I? If you guys don't know, I have a rottweiler and a pitbull; they are supposed to be good in Schutzhund. But, i'm not sure if i should enroll them in it. I just want your opinions. All replies will be taken into consideration, thank you!!

Re: Schutzhund?

My first thought would be, don't do what other people tell you to do. If you have an interest in SchH, then go for it. Find a good club and check them out. Talk to the participants, watch them, see if you could get into it, have them evaluate your dogs.

I just started Max in SchH and I can tell you, it's a very time consuming sport, even the little bit that I've done, so you have to be 100% into it. But then, that's true for any dog sport

Re: Schutzhund?

I have always been intrested in SchH. I've been intrested in protection, tracking, and bite work the most. My dogs already have a strong bite at about 15 weeks old. I'm not sure what they really do there, and what they teach your dogs, so if you could tell me a little i'd be a happy camper! Lol... (-: I'm going to do a little more reasearch on SchH; and see what i'm going to do, i've always been intrested in this sport, but having 2 jobs and all; i'd have to find time! I'm sure i can do something though. I always find a way! Lol. Thanks!

Re: Schutzhund?

The Schutzhund club I called charges $450 for six, hour long classes . It is not cheap; so if your not in it 100%, it may be better to try something a little less expensive .

Are they in obedience classes yet? When are you going to post a pic of your rottie!!!

Re: Schutzhund?

I'll post a picture sooner of later (: i'm being a little lazy. Lol; They are in obedience classes, but i heard SchH is better obedience class. I'm really intrested in SchH; i'm REALLY considering it. I know it's not cheap, but i also have 3 more people in the house willing to help me pay for it, I'm the owner of the pups, but they love them just as much as i do [possibly i doubt it] and they help me pay for it when i need help. I'm sure they will help, they love the best for the dog!! Lol.

Re: Schutzhund?

I've also heard, that if your dog doesn't already protect you; then they won't be allowed in SchH... Is that true? I hope not.. My pups are a little loony. Lol; they arn't really sure of danger yet.. Doesn't SchH teach your dog to protect? or track, or things like that.

Re: Schutzhund?

We recently discussed Schutzhund training; here is the link. I would not say that Schutzhund is better than an obedience class. Strong obedience training is needed before you even consider Schutzhund. I, like you am just starting to get into it...we have a lot to learn! I think it would be hard for you to train two puppies for Schutzhund at once !

Not sure where you heard this!!! This is completely wrong! How would they test it? Run after you with a bat and see what your dog does? I think you have been misinformed about Schutzhund. Concentrate on obedience, once that is done (well it's never really done, but you know what I mean ), start thinking about Schutzhund.

Re: Schutzhund?

Yeah; i know it's going to be hard... But the rottweiler is mine, and the pitbull is technically my bestfriends... I'll be training my dog while she trains hers. The pups already know a handful of tricks and have strong bites and a high drive. Yeah, i get misguided alot; you made me laugh with that chase you with a bat thing. Haha! (: *chuckle* Yes, i've been owning dogs all my life; thats 18.5 years for ya! And I STILL have ALOT to learn. Yeah; surprising i'm 18-but i am a very responsible dog owner. That is why i'm working 2 jobs, one job for the dogs, and one job to help pay the house... I'll look into that link you put in your reply, thank you!

Re: Schutzhund?

both of you guys need to read up on schH.

keep the pitbull out of schH, in general they are not suitable for schH.

If you're rottie pup is 15wks then you should go down to your local club and have them check out the dog. There is a certain way you need to raise and train the pup for the most effectiveness.

research ivan balabanov and positive motivation.

right now, I wouldn't do anything with your pup except play tug...always let him win. Make sure the tug toy is special. Play with him for a few short sessions a day and then put it away. Play fetch with a ball too but for short period.

Don't keep any toys lying around the house and don't over feed your dog.

At the very least find an OB trainer that know schH - you want 1:1 session and ask him to show you "The Game" An experienced trainer who knows schH will know what that means.

SchH takes considerable time 20+ hrs per week.

shutzhund clubs by usa rules are to be not for profit you evidently called a so called schutzhund trainer dues vary club to club and range from 300.00 a year to 1200.00 anymore than that its not a club.

Please better inform yourself. Why would you say this?? My helper/trainer LOVES my Pit Bull and is having fun training him. These kind of breed biases have no business here.

I am informed. Thanks. There always exceptions but IN GENERAL, pitbulls are not suitable. I've seen videos of Labs competing in schutzhund but again IN GENERAL they are not suitable.

I never said I dodn't like Pitts.

Re: Schutzhund?

What is it about a Pit that you think makes it unsuitable?

Mick.

Re: Schutzhund?

And here I was, going to ask why pitties weren't appropriate for SchH. I thought because they were banned in Ontario, it was just the Ontario clubs that didn't take them. I'll make a note to ask my club why not.

To the OP, just be careful which club you join, don't join the closest one to you. Some are better than others. I checked into 3 clubs in my area before I decided on the one I'm at. I also asked a lot of people who've been in SchH which club they'd recommend. I went and talked to the handlers and helpers and found a club that fit us best. It's not the closest, but it's the one I'm most comfortable with.
