Dock Jumping Questions Does anyone know anything about training for dock jumping? When I do internet searches I come up with all kinds of unrelated results. Can someone give me a starting point or keywords? Ideally if you know of any group in Massachusetts or New Hampshire that trains or competes, I would appreciate knowing. Thanks!

Re: Dock Jumping Questions Okay so why do it? Oh yeah it looks cool and all but what if your dog lands on a branch, broken spike, or steel rod? And what if the dog is dead from jumping into water that nobody knows anything about? My Lab was never trained to enter the water unless she walked into it. As an avid duck hunter, I think this is the dumbest thing I have ever seen dogs made to do. IMO.

Re: Dock Jumping Questions Pretty sure that practice and competition are done in a known, controlled environment. Since we don't hunt and have limited access to environments where dogs are allowed to run around off leash, I seriously doubt that we'll find ourselves near an unknown body of water that Zooey will choose to enthusiastically fling herself into without prompting. Your argument makes sense for your lifestyle however. In the meantime, I'm trying to find activities which make the most of my pup's tendency to fling herself off of objects in a clear attempt to win some kind of one-dog long jump competition.

Re: Dock Jumping Questions Most dock diving competitions are done with a man-made dock and large pool-if it is at a lake-the jumping area is cleared and checked daily for debris. I have taken my Rott to competition-she loves it-jumped 9 feet 11 inches her first time out!!! I just have a hard time getting her out of the pool! There are some great training articles on dockdogs.com-it looks easy but its not-you have to build the dogs confidence at the edge of the dock. Most competitions will have "open" dock practice in between heats-anyone can practice then!
