Hospice therapy!

I found an ad at the vets for hospice therapy volunteers, of Course Cash still has to be a year old, but I also have to have 12 hours of training, I can do that now or wait until he is ready, I think I may do it now, the location is close to my home, The lady told me the basic tetsting(for Cash) consist of seeing how he is towards wheel chairs, canes, crutches etc.. and his overall temperment, then if he passes he will get his TDI certification

Since everyone ex:my trainer, my breeder, and my vet think Cash will be great Im excited, now we are just in the process of getting him to complete his down at the first command!! once hes done he stays forever but getting him there he gets stubburn.. My husband told me If I can do that type of volunteer work and working with elderly people that are Ill then I am a stronger person then he thought, I think I am..

Re: Hospice therapy!

Kim that is great to hear you must be so excited! Lots of luck to you both, I bet you'll find it incredibly rewarding. Please keep us updated when does he turn a year old?

Btw, I laughed out loud at your comment on feet on the weight chart thread...

Re: Hospice therapy!

Thank you for your kind words.

I had photos of my Ch Sch/VPG 3 & IPO 3 dog doing same - but they were erased - as I vainly thought the dog looked dorky.

I have since learned - Sometimes we all need a reality check. It is not about what the dog looks like - it should be about what they do.

Blessings,
Mary-Ann

That's a wonderful plan to get into therapy work! I think you'll feel so blessed and happy to be able to help others. Plus, your pooch will love it! :)

Re: Hospice therapy!

OP, I think that is so great that there is something like that in your area and you are so active with Cash! Way to go - it sounds like he'll do a super job! :)
Makjamz - I love the pic...that's what Cash and my Winnie will look like once they take their TDI testing. Question...Where did you get the vest?

I wish you all could meet this dog, omg he is the best dog I have ever had in my life, he is almost 9 months old and loves to cuddle give kisses and he responds to commands like I cant believe myself.. My breeder is so proud of him, and she makes me feel good by telling me I made him the great dog he is, i dont see him changing much, I mean Gypsy didnt change from the time she was 7 months, her temperment has stayed the same, well it has gotten a bit better, other then her obedience being improved... They both have god recalls... One thing with Gypsy that made me proud 2 days ago I was at the end of the yard and she was near the front, well the neighbors dog (good dog other side thats older) was running in the driveway barking and I yelled Gypsy down and stay and she did, she didnt even pay the dog attention... that made me feel so good..

I have a "therapy dog in training vest" I bought it online for $44 I bought a medium my trainer told me it was a good way to get him around people but also not allowing them to pet him... I just typed in "therapy dog equipment"

Back then Delta Society used to sell them. You might want to call & see if they still do - as I did not see them on their product list today.

You can also do an internet search for them. I also had a logo embroidery place do a label I designed & sew it onto one of those larger dog packs.

Good luck and you will have fun with your dog partner.
cheers

My MIL is in a nursing home with dementia. We were caregivers for her for almost two years before we just couldn't keep her safe anymore at home. The nursing home is less than two miles from our house and we are very active there. I'll tell you what, helping with the elderly is both the most difficult and most rewarding things I have ever done in my life. Be prepared. You will never know what's going to happen. I'm looking into therapy programs for Zooey right now. She's just so great with MIL and the nursing home and she's only 15 weeks old!

Re: Hospice therapy!

I love that picture. I am planning on getting my older dog Clea into being a therapy dog. She has the absolute best temperment, and really knows when somebody is feeling bad and just wants to cheer them up. I was searching the tdi website and am going to start the process with her.
