Arrow Xasha passed her CGC!!

I just wanted to share. Our Xasha passed her CGC last night at only eight months old!! We are so proud of her. She was stellar! She also graduated her K-9 Good Manners class. Upward and onward. Next class, conformation and Super Dog before we get into formal obedience.

Re: Xasha passed her CGC!!

Thank you Targon. We plan on continuing our obedience as it is all I really know of that we can do with her until she's 24 months and her hips have been tested. Our breeder has been exceptionally firm on this. My husband is looking forward to doing agility with her. I haven't read up on rally yet. Will do so after this post. I find that the busier we are with her, the better dog we have and I must say that we are having a blast as well. I look forward to many, many years of sharing new experiences with her.

Congrats!! Obedience and a good dog-handler relationship are a good foundation for ANYTHING you want to do with your dog.

That being said, there are lots of things you can work on "on the flat" before you ever get into contacts, weaving and jumping which are better left for a mature dog. There's a book out called flatwork: foundation for agility and I've recently been reading click and play agility which has a lot of games you could play with a puppy. Many clubs also offer "puppy agility" or "performance puppy" classes which is just a more structured environment for learning these "games" with the added distraction of other dogs. The key is to build fun games into everyday and not spend too much time "drilling"

Re: Xasha passed her CGC!!

I'm curious as to others opinions on this. As I stated, my husband is really looking forward to agility. Our breeder is ADAMANT (sp?) that we do not start it until 2 years of age. According to her it's too much stress on the hips before they are full grown.

Are there ways to start training for this without the stresses on joints that she is addressing?

A lot of the games I was mentioning before are walking over a ladder, getting a dog used to changing sides while walking/running beside you, getting a dog to go out and around a pilon (no juming here) teaching your dog Left and right. teaching your dog to pay attention t you while other dogs are working around you.

NONE of these inolves the jumping/contact (ANY more than obedience training) that would make one worry about hips and or other stress on growing tendons and ligaments. Is your breeder involved in agility?

Nice job!

I too am a firm believer in the more you give your Rottie to do, mentally and physically, the happier are dog and owner.

Re: Xasha passed her CGC!!

Ayoka,
No my breeder does not do agility. She does Schutzund, therapy, carting, herding and some sort of tracking. Thank you for the information. I am going to call our facility we have been taking classes at. They also offer training for sheep herding and agility. Thanks again! She is such a daddy's girl and he will be so excited if he can start this with her now.
