| so exciting at training, there is an unstructured sort of schedule. there is one dog who is being trained in true personal protection. he is really quite amazing. the only dog who isn't crated when not working, the only dog who really works in his daily life in this. (remember, El Paso is a border town) there are several dogs being trained in drug and bomb detection at this kennel, not during schutzhund training, but during business hours.
this dog's owner is a very nice, soft spoken man, and very helpful in training the other dogs. watching his dog's training has been quite educational for me. so often the explaination begins, "because he is being trained in PP.....". I've been able to witness "hidden sleeve" training too.
so last saturday, one of the woman trainers and I were sitting at the picnic table talking. this man and his dog were at the end of the field, pretty much in the shadows. the helper starts running toward the other end of the field, about half way, drops the sleeve. acts scared about it, runs back to pick it up, sees the dog running toward him and turns and runs away. the woman trainer is VERY concerned, as was I. "he's gonna get bit!!" she shouts. but then I see the dog is muzzled as it runs past the sleeve toward the helper. they are training for body contact it seems. and the dog does pass by the sleeve and go for the man.
going to this training is the high point of my week! |
