Will training for CGC affect Schutzhund training?

ok what is a cgc test, and will that affect him when it comes to schutzhund. I was told I shouldn't do any formal obedience with him until I started his schutzhund training.

Re: Will training for CGC affect Schutzhund training?

the cgc has nothing to do with formal obedianceif he will walk on a loose leash /sit / be polite with friendly strangers /not afraid ofnoises they may subject him too / and can be left with someone while you leave the room then he will pass his cgc. its really nothing to train for if done correctly by the evaluater and actually is a worthless thing for a young dog. my advice would be start his sch. at the club and when your dog is 2 do a cgc if you still want to many young dogs that pass a cgc wouldnt pass if given again at 2

A friend of mine's dog passed his CGC a while ago-then a few weeks later passed his BH and is going for his 1 in november. She never had a problem with Schutzhund training.

Larry, I understand what you're saying about testing a young dog vs a mature dog, however.... I like to expose my young dogs to this kind of handling, and environment.... it certainly doesn't hurt them for any formal training they'll be getting, and it does help in rottweiler PR a bit.

Meep, I say CGC away. My Buzz got his a week after his 6mos birthday.... yes, he'll be tested later in life as well, but the experience was good for him, and I've got puppy buyers to prod on...lol.

yes the experiance is good but you can get just as good expiance on your own or at the club without supporting a AKC project and by doing your dogs twice you support the AKC twice and without the akc and its anything goes attitude of if we can register it you can breed it. losing funding is the only way the akc may change its preeding requiremants and weed outthe worst of the byb's or force them to go ckc with most people know is a bogus at best registry. i personnaly would never attend a akc event of any kind and if it werent for the fact of the scorebooks on my dogs listing them as mix i wouldnt have registered them at all

Re: Will training for CGC affect Schutzhund training?

Insurance companies are moving towards requiring CGC's for coverage on some dog breeds. We do SchH and CGC's - never had any major problems, although we did have to ask that a bouncing basketball not be used once :)

Re: Will training for CGC affect Schutzhund training?

cgc will not affect a dog that is used for schutzhund or will be trained for it.
in fact, a schutzhund dog should be a well balanced dog.
the cgc test is a mild version of some obedience and temperament test.
it's like a pre-kinder version of the future BH tset you will need before you go to your first schutzhund level.

Crap Larry! I'm having hard enough time getting puppy buyers to be ethical, responsible and upstanding... I don't have time to go to war against the AKC! roflmao

Love you man!
