Restrictions

I haven't decided what activities I want to do with Greta yet. She is just 5 months old and in obedience classes. If I decide to have her spayed later on...aren't there restrictions to what you can do with your dog if it has been spayed?

She can't be shown in conformation events, but I think that's about it.

Re: Restrictions

Does that include obedience? I'm new at this, as you can tell.

I think any obedience event allows spayed or neutered dogs.

No. Conformation is for intact dogs only. Performance events such as obedience, rally, carting, agility, herding, tracking, etc., do allow altered animals. If you have no pedigree (rescue dog for example) you can get an ILP number from the AKC which requires the animal be altered.

Re: Restrictions

You'd be excluded from any breed surveys as well, if its schutzhund.

As for not sure what to do, sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error. I originally wanted to do Schutzhund, but in my dogs 1st year, i couldn't find a club I liked, so I looked into other avenues. I tried agility, he had TOO much prey drive, crazy. Ha, didn't know that was possible! Competitive OB, had been on the hunt for the right trainer, and then found the right schutzhund club. It was the right choice for us all along, but had to wait to find the right club.

So it's going to be a little of both, what suits you two, and a club or class thats right for you two. You'll know when you find it.

Re: Restrictions

There's a lot you can do with a spayed (or neutered) dog.

I obed show my rescue girl under ILP. Being a rescue, her background is unknown so she shows under ILP. All ILP dogs are spayed or neutered.

I also track, do rally with her, and I'm pursuing drafting. You can also herd with with a spayed or neutered dog.

Re: Restrictions

Breeding suitability tests according to German standards which consider working ability.
