One slight correction: John's Athena (#4 in Ex JWW) is MACH.

Re: Top 10 Agility Rotts

It's a big pet peeve of mine to see a Top 10 List Contain 21 dogs... Top 10 to me should include the Top 10 dogs (hence the name Top Ten) and if the 10 and 11th best dogs happen to have a tie then they both get put in... but to include ties all the way thru and keep the top 10 scores is overkill. Using this method you could have 100 dogs in the top 10 if there were 91 dogs w/ a tieing score for... IF I am ranked in the Top 10 as # 9 for example I want it to mean that there are 8 dogs better than my dog... not maybe 18...

Sorry, just a vent...

Re: Top 10 Agility Rotts

I love how most of them on the list are listed by their long, registered names and then among them is "Butch". Very cute.

Re: Top 10 Agility Rotts

Well, when its based on dogs defeated, there are often problems like that. Another issue is for dogs who run at large trials and take 5th. They may have defeated 34 dogs in one run, but since they took 5th, they get no credit.....but the dogs who run at small trials with few dogs in the class are able to rack up points every time they Q. Not a perfect system....

The only solution I can see to breaking ties is to calculate the yards/sec, but I'm not sure that each course's total yardage is listed in the awards magazine.

Re: Top 10 Agility Rotts

I love to see these stats, and I'll admit that with the tiny entries in Novice around here having ties count the way they do actually gives Roca a snowballs chance in h*** of maybe making it into the top ten somewhere, so it doesn't bug me at all .
For comparison's sake...
The way the herding stats have been calculated in the past has been the same (except all levels are lumped together for an overall Top Ten...there has never been a TT list for each level)...based on placements/dogs beaten. Obedience has also been done this way. I think the biggest difference is that in those other venues in the past I've noticed that the few ties are just counted as additional placements, so for example it would be like so, leaving only 10 dogs in the TT (unless there was a tie at 10th):
1) Ben 54
2) Mike 43
Suzy 43
4) Crazy 34
and so on...

Re: Top 10 Agility Rotts

Yep, I've seen that too. But then how do you decide which one is 4th and which one is 5th? That's why I suggested the YPS calculation.

So if you were to do the stats, would you go with the highest YPS posted in all runs or the average? Seems like a hecka lot of work either way .

In this hypothetical situation (I added a couple more "dogs" to hopefully clarify) it's quite clear to me that the dogs listed under "2" are both tied for second best (or at least second highest in total dogs beaten), and the dog listed as "4" is the fourth best (because those two dogs listed at "2" both have higher totals so 3 dogs are ahead of him/her). Notice the dogs that are tied are listed alphabetically so as not to imply one is higher than the other :
1) Ben 54
2) Mike 43
Suzy 43
4) Crazy 34
5) Happy 24
Sleepy 24
7) Grumpy 15

As I said before, I'm quite happy with the way it's done now though (heck ,if ties had been included in the herding TT Elsa could have added another top ten year to her 5)! It gives the ARC another opportunity to recognize more working dogs...that's ALWAYS a good thing in my book (after all...there is a Top Ten for each sex as well as a Top Twenty in conformation...).

In these cases I wouldn't break the ties, but instead leave it something like:

1
2
2
3
4
5
5
6
7
7

and stop after 10 dogs are listed (a couple more if there is a tie for 7th)...

I think bragging that a dog is in the TT should mean they are one of the 10 best in whatever areana is being discussed... Oh well, it's not something I'll lose any sleep over... My dogs are all #1 to me so that's what really matters :)
