Talking Agility Novice A/Open Question....

Hi all---

We found out earlier in the week that Julius made it into the agility trial in March. He's was the 15th dog on the waiting list but we got in....so we're pretty darn thrilled. Julius has a leg in both Novice JWW & Standard.

I know that if he got both legs in Standard, then for JWW we would have to run Julius in Novice B. My question is, we are entered for Novice A both days for both Standard & JWW. Let's just say that he qualifies on Saturday & again on Sunday in Standard. Then do they automatically bump you up to Novice B for the last run of the day in JWW?!? How do they do that? Or do you just run your dog in Novice A JWW even though he has a title in Standard? Should we notify them before we check in that he may get his title & that we might need to be bumped up or what?

Get my drift?

Thanks ya'll! Lemme know if you need me to clarify. Re-reading my post, it seems a bit confusing.

Re: Agility Novice A/Open Question....

hello,
i just ran to my rule book to double check...novice A means you ,the handler, and dog, never got an agility title before.also, handler must be owner or imediate family member to owner to show in novice A .you can show in B at your discretion.but B is usually reserved for those that have earned titles and handlers that have earned agility titles before.
but if you have any doubt, just go to the secretaries table before the trial starts, and they will let you know if you need to move up, etc.
but from what i remember, go ahead and stay in A,until you get your title.

Re: Agility Novice A/Open Question....

but reading your post again...you got one leg in each...means you need 2 more in each for your titles.you are ok for novice A then.
good luck!!!!
boy, is it that hard to get into trials up there?
we get close to maximum, but there is usually room for 1 more!

Re: Agility Novice A/Open Question....

sorry, me again...clarification...if you get your standard third leg on sunday(example),
you are ok to run jumpers on sunday, still in novice A.since paperwork and title has not been processed by akc yet.

Gotcha, thank you!

This is only our second agility trial ever so I'm not really sure if it's hard to get in, but it has been the past two times. Julius was put on the waiting list both times...but got in due to cancellations. I have heard of other people in our training classes having issues getting into agility trials in the area.

I think that typically 300 dogs run per day....

Re: Agility Novice A/Open Question....

No, you can move up (from Novice to Open) but you can not move from Nov A to Nov B for ANY trials that have already closed.

Meaning if the trial closed already when you title, you have to stay in Nov A. Even if the next trial is weeks away...

Also if, for instance you title in Nov A on a Saturday, you have to let the trial sec know that you're moving to Open for the Sunday within a half hour of the last run of the day.

My Tara never did make it into Nov B, we went right from Nov A to Open to Excellent.

Oh, ps. The AKC only allows each judge to judge 300 runs a day. ALthough that might have been recently upped to 330.

Re: Agility Novice A/Open Question....

300 runs is a tiny trial, and the few that are around here fill instantly (unless they're known for a bad super or poor equipment). Those are typically the ones you need to overnight the entries for.

Once a trial has closed, you can not move from NovA to B. Thus, the point is moot. For FUTURE entries, you would need to move to NovB for the unfinished title (JWW in the example).

For EXCELLENT (not novice) this is different, as ExA --> ExB is a similar move as Nov --> Open. ExB is the Master's class, whereas ExA is the Excellent class. You can NOT earn MACH points in A, only in B......thus the allowance for the move-up in the same trial weekend: I.e. you finish your AX on Saturday and move from ExA Std to ExB Std for Sunday. If you Q on Sunday, you earn your first MX leg (of 10 req'd), and any seconds under SCT count as MACH points.

Is this an AKC rule??? I've never heard of it. Around here, move-ups are accepted at basically any point during the day (or via email when you arrive home that night).

This has changed to 330 runs per day, and is already effective.

Re: Agility Novice A/Open Question....

The half hour thing- I know it's listed in the premium of a very good trial sec around here. So not sure if it's akc or just her. Wondering now.

We have to overnight Everything to get in. It's awful. Trials open and close with a bang the same day. 1200 runs is pretty typical and I think I was somewhere there were 5 rings.

2 rings is nice. (660 runs now). You don't have conflicts if you're in 2 divisions and you can sit and watch your friends.

Thank you for all of the replies, everyone! You've sorted it out for me & I may just mention it the trial secretary when we check in on Friday. Thanks again!
