Therapy of Social Training

Is there anyone that can direct me to a good book that could assist me in training my rott as a therapy dog or if there is someone who specializes in training therapy dog's please e-mail me. Unfortunately the nearest association that can or might, assist me is a 2 hours drive away and they do not train privately own dogs.

Therapy dog's aren't trained (except for basic manners)...your dog just needs to have a good disposition, be people oriented, must listen to your commands, and most Therapy Dog organizations require the dog has his Canine Good Citizen Certificate. You can condition your dog to wheel chairs, walkers, small children, etc and make sure his/her reaction is neutral. There are several books available about Pet Therapy (I haven't read any of these) but most of the books available are more directed to setting up a Pet Therapy program.

- Pets in Therapy. Abdill & Juppe', 1997 $15.95

- Therapy Dogs: Training your dog to reach others. Davis, 1992 $19.98

- Volunteering with your Pet. Burch, 1996 $14.96

The above books I got from the DogWise book catalog. Just go to DogWise.com, request a catalog, and you should be able to find these titles and other ones regarding pet therapy.
