Oh, I understand! It's a very commonly made assumption, and one that I made as well before examining the issues more closely. But on the bright side, this widespread assumption greatly contributes to the powers of deterrence of the large "protection" breeds.

Here is a link for you. Scroll down to Mick Trainer's post- it is an absolutely fascinating read, and should give you a clearer idea of the natural defense capabilities of the majority of dogs.

It sounds as though PSA could be of possible interest to you. It's a sport that I would love to participate in (there are no PSA clubs to be found in my country), though it does seem a tough one, and I notice that the Rottweiler is not the breed of choice of most of its practitioners.

I will add that Moondog is entirely right. A dog that has the courage to engage a human assailant is a whole lot of animal, and one that can be a challenge to train and to own. My dog is very high in defensive strength, and now at three and a half years of age is a completely reliable and steady companion in all public situations. But in his youth, his unharnessed defensive reactions coupled with my own inexpertise and lack of training resources made for something of a liability.

I'm sure that you will do all the necessary research, and arrive at the decision that best suits your family's needs and your level of commitment.

Best wishes,

Re: New to forum, looking for local PP trainer

I see nothing wrong with what you are looking to achieve here. It is very much do able. The hardest part will be finding the dog that is capable for such work. There are strong working lines that will be able to produce dogs capable of doing this level of work. Doing your research and being high up in the litter will be essential. Unfortunatly having dogs with SchH in thei pedigree is a help but you wil need to know more before it is truly helpful to you in the selection of your pup as not all schH titles are equal as a guide to the dogs capability in the real world. If you wish feel free to PM me the pedigree of the dogs you are looking at and I will giove my opinion (it is opinion only) but you will need to do your research.

Mick.

Re: New to forum, looking for local PP trainer

Vista,
What is the problem, why can't I post my own email address? Feel free to email me if you wish, after all as a moderator you have that ability while others don’t.

How am I supposed to be able to communicate with anyone if I can't get him or her my email address???
Am I not supposed to be able to discuss breeders with people before I buy a pup?
Should I not have the opportunity to research them thoroughly?

I can't discuss breeders here, as it is against the rules.
I can't view anybody else’s public profiles to send them email.
I can't PM anybody.
What am I supposed to do???

I understand not posting someone else’s email address, due to their right to privacy, but I don’t understand your rule why I can’t post my own email address? This makes no sense to me.
