the origin of the sleeve

Where does the sleeve originate from?
And which country
And can it's roots be traced to roman times or before
This should make for a good thread I hope

By "Sleeve", I assume that your referring to a Protection sleeve, like a Schutzhund Trial sleeve.

The earliest sleeves were just heavy textile material wrapped multiple times around the arm. I'm guessing that this technique was used around the 1900's, when schutzhund as a breed evaluation was being developed, in Germany.

Perhaps there were protective clothing that was worn by the Lion handlers in ancient Rome. Perhaps the origin is much older. It can be argued that "Tomarctus" (sp) might have been the first canine to bite a protective sleeve. Even a "Neandertal" would know better than to get bit.

Damn, I knew I should start keeping a running bibliography sometime...
...but I think that the earliest account of training war dogs comes from celtic times (pre-roman even) and the methods of sending a dogge against a padded man aren't too dissimilar to modern practice.
I think the Spanish, when they went to lay waste to South America also trained their dogs -- though they were way more barbaric inasmuch as they'd feed packs of their dogs on indians, yuck.

Now I know I won't sleep easy until I look up where I read this from.
