need some guidance please

Hello, If there is someone out there that can run down the whole process from puppy to adult for me would very much appreciated. I've owned a Rottweiler once before in the past, but I wasn't into it like I am now. I'm going to be on a 6 months waiting list, so I figure within this time I'll occupy myself by learning all I need to for my new puppy. I want him to go through the whole process, bottom line I want him to have a good foundation and get the full potential out of our new family member. I want his life to be fun for him. I don't know too much about shutzhund, but it sounds like something I'm interested in & possibly get into showing him in shows. List the age brackets when he should start certain programs, etc. Thanks for all your patience as you can see My family and I are new to this. All replies are welcomed. TIA

use this time to read and observe all you can.
Go and check out your local dog clubs/training facilities.
Get guidance from the breeder of your puppy.....
Welcome to Rotts http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif I wish more people out there were like you and educated themselves BEFORE the puppy came...

I agree with "Luvurott", read as much as possible on this site. I did the same thing you are two years ago and learned valuable information from just this forum. Don't be afraid to ask as many different questions as you can! Schutzhund takes a lot of time and training - definitely look into basic obedience.

Good Luck!

Training is important, but the right kind of training is MORE important. There are lots of training methods and trainers out there and not all are the best for you and your puppy! If you want to get involved with Schutzhund, obedience, or showing the foundation for each of these is obedience. The first year of a puppy's life is very important, but it should be very fun for them so their spirits aren't ruined (too much harsh corrections while training can make them hate 'working'). The trainer I work w/ believes that a puppy shouldn't have any real corrections until they are a year. The first year is for teaching them, building their confidence, socializing, imprinting! I will try and post the name of a good book later. I can't remember it now.

Good Luck!

Sheila Booth is the author of that book.

Join a Club. Without the help of a club it is hard for an experienced trainer to title a dog in Schutzhund. Even with the help of a good trainer very few dogs a capable of acquiring a Schutzhund title. If the Breeder has never titled a dog to Schutzhund then I would not consider their advise or breedings. I would only want the strongest pup out of a litter which Sire was Sch III and mother was at least Sch I. If you have to go back more than one generation on either the top or bottom side of the pedigree to find working dogs then that could indicate a weakness that will be passed down to the pup.

To do well in Schutzhund it takes the right pup, great training, and hours and hours of dedication. Join a club a soon as posible even if you don't have your pup yet.
