Elijah has a new title!

We were entered in the Medallion Rottweiler Club agility in Plano, Il. Oct. 11 and 12....what a kick to see so many Rotties out there running the courses!:)

We had 3 nq's....really good runs but Elijah's nose was workin' overtime. But.....on the fourth and final run of the weekend....Elijah qualified in Excellent A Standard Agility earning a 3rd place, his Excellent Agility (AX) title, and that Beautiful Medallion the the red, white and blue ribbon!:D What a thrill to earn the title at that event!:)

Congrats on the title! :)

I was curious what you meant by "Elijah's nose was workin' overtime. Does Elijah some times slow down to sniff certain obstacles?

Hi Rott'n'lab Mom!

I am trying to think of the best way to describe Elijah's nose workin' overtime!:) He doesn't sniff the obstacles. What he does.... for instance....he will go over a couple of jumps and while he is running towards the next obstacle he will catch a whiff of something...he will keep running but going slower and only half watching where he is going...slows us down and his concentration is off.....this is an outdoor problem and the cause of a number of nq's....doesn't happen all the time...seems whatever he is smelling is more important to him than what he is doing at the moment!!

A Rottweiler who likes to use his nose... We only began agility training with Bella in September. Of all the dogs in our class, she's the most interested in sniffing the ground on the course than all the other dogs. It's been quite a challenge to get her to focus on the course rather than finding treat crumbs she might find lying around! I don't know whether it's because she's more food focused than the rest or really does have a keener nose.

She'll move briskly through part of a course and then suddenly stop to sniff and then lick the floor. It's been a real challenge keeping her focused! Did you have these kind of problems with Elijah in the beginning?

Hi Rott'n'lab Mom,

Everyone has their own way of training for agility so I am sure many may not agree with this. When Elijah first started training for agility I coaxed him onto obstacles with pieces of hot dog...each time he did the obstacle he received a piece. There was always food in my hand so Elijah never showed any interest in smelling the floor. As time went by and we began doing several obstacles in a row I would treat Elijah after he completed them. Later he was treated after finishing a course which is still the way we do it.

This has really worked well for us. Now Elijah will smell the ground like a Bloodhound when we are waiting our turn to run in competition....he has done this just before some of his best runs.

If you don't like the idea of using hot dog bits for treats, Bil Jac makes thes little liver treats that most dogs love and they are just the right size for training...

:)
