New to schutzhund I found a schutzhund club fairlly near by (30 minutes). I plan to go check it out. They said you get three free visits to see how you like it then you request a 3 month guest membership, when that is up they vote you in. They said I could bring my dogs the first time I head out but to bring my crates. My question is do you think I'll acually get to work with my dogs at all, or will they just have to hang out in thier crates the whole time? Should I email them back and ask them? Thanks for any info. Crystal

My guess is the TD/helper will probably do a little rag/tug work to try and help evaluate the dog. Not sure exactly why they request you bring crates unless they have a spot to help keep the dogs cool. That way you don't have to leave them in your vehicle. Some will have you bring your dogs out to watch the other dogs work. I don't subscribe to that idea myself at least not trying to evaluate a dog. IMO you won't be getting a true reading of the dog as it may be feeding off the actions of the other dogs. Biggest thing to keep in mind is if they want to do something you don't feel comfortable with, tell them so. Listening to that voice in the back of your head might save you alot of heartache down the road. Never hurts to get that second opinion. I would email or call the TD/helper and find out exactly what will be going on that first day. Hope this helps you some. Keith Jenkins

My guess would be that the crate is to keep the dog secure. I know with the club that I train with there are an awful lot of intact dogs around. They are very careful about whom is out with whom. During bitework, all dogs except the one working are put up. During OB, dogs are worked in teams, onw dog on the long down while the other is doing his pattern and vice versa. All other dogs are put up except the dogs that are working. During tracking, again, two dogs working seperate tracks, all other dogs put up while they are working. Probably a safety thing. That would be my novice guess anyway. ;)
