Carting

I am looking for advise on how to start carting. I know how to train it, but I do not currently have the money for a cart. Do you suggest training commands first, hooking up to things other than a cart, getting a harness and then teaching commands? I am just at a loss for where to begin. I have a friend who does carting, but she started using small carts which are huge on my boy because she has newfies!

You can get him use to pulling logs around the backyard. It's not something that I've ever done but I do know people who have with good success. You can certainly begin teaching the commands for going left, right, forward, stop, backup. I'd make sure I didn't double up on her obedience commands though.

As for carts: You can get the Radio Flyer wagons at Sears. Ikon Outfitters sells adaptors for them and the whole unit is inexpensive in comparison to the purchase of a new cart. You could also check around on the various carting sites, email lists and ebay for used dog carts.

Hope this helps. :) Have fun.

Here are a couple of sites that I like. I started with a converted radio flyer wagon, using pvc pipe for the shafts. I think I'll make a new one this summer though, as I'd like something a bit more substantial.

You can teach all of the commands without a harness. Having my dogs know left and right has been wonderful- they are better at it then I am. You can get a harness and with a spreader bar(wood dowel) you can attach to tires or pieces of wood. I would start with attaching the traces to soda bottles and hte like so that they get used to strange sounds "chasing" them. You need a rock solid dog in carting. Nothing is more dangerous then a dog bolting from fear when the cart is attached to them. With the tire or wood it gets them used to pull against a resistant.
