Smile Soft Stool & Diarrhea

Hi everyone- im wondering if anyone can tell me why my 3 yr old Rotty "Boyz" has constant soft stool and diarrhea. I have taken him to the vet before and he said that sometimes it happens, and to just change his food. That worked in the beginning but now when i change his food it goes back to normal stool for about a week and then gets soft again. i recently took him back again to have my vet tell me he has colitis and try giving him Mucilose. Im not sure where to find that, and also when i looked it up it seems to be fiber. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Soft Stool & Diarrhea

Plain, canned pumpkin (NOT the pie mix) can do wonders for both sloppy stools and constipation both. Try it! Mix a heaping tablespoonful into each meal (precise measurement not necessary - you can use quite a bit) and see if that helps.

My dog gets pumpkin quite a bit - even green beans help the stool (at least for my dog they do).

What food are you feeding? How much are you feeding of it?
Soft stools and diarrhea can be cause by overfeeding...also the dog may be sensitive to an ingredients in one of the foods.

Re: Soft Stool & Diarrhea

We have tried alot. Most recently he was on Nutro Herron and something. He was okay on that for about 3 weeks. His coat was beautiful and shiny. Then when his stool got soft again we went on to try the Kirkland chicken and Rice (only because we found out that it was made by Diamond) and he eats 2 cups twice a day. Kirkland seemed better than the Nutro he went about 41/2 weeks. Now here we are soft again... we have added rice to his food and that had very lil affect.

Re: Soft Stool & Diarrhea

My girl constantly had soft stools from day one. Over time, we found that she has several food intolerances. She finally had solid stools when we moved her over to a grain-free food. It looks like you've been trying lower- and mid-quality foods so far, perhaps a higher quality food would suit him better. Some of the ones discussed on this board include Orijen, Innova, Wellness, Canidae and others. You'll save money that way, too, because you'll feed him less (and on vet bills!).

Re: Soft Stool & Diarrhea

I agree that a change to a higher quality food may help this. Assuming your boy is an adult, I'd start with a grain-free food. You will be able to reduce the quantity of food you're feeding him, which may also help.

My dog gets a rotation of a few different foods (one bag then switch). Right now she's on 1/2 Taste of the Wild Bison and Venison and 1/2 Steve's Real Food prepared raw.

If the rice made it worse, you may want to try a grain-free food.

Re: Soft Stool & Diarrhea

My boy also go threw his phases of soft stool & diarrhea. He just started having diarrhea again for the past 3 days. He was on Innova, switch to Kirkland Chix & rice, now on Lamb & rice. He been on this for about 2 months and had no problem, coat got better, but now diarrhea again. My question is. Is it in the breed. there is alot of thread here about Soft stool and diarrhea. Even if they are on good quality food. And seems that the only remedee is Raw which im not looking into yet.

Re: Soft Stool & Diarrhea

It's not a "breed" thing at all. I don't know any breed that always has nice, firm stools no matter what you feed them. That being said, I think certain lines in all breeds are prone to food allergies, nervous stomachs, etc.

It's a food thing. Like people, some dogs tolerate certain foods better than others. And let's think about it - even the most premium kibble is still processed and preserved to within an inch of its life. Dogs do amazingly well, all things considered.
