Unhappy Pup with dysplasia

My pup is just over a year old now and was vet confirmed with x rays, by a orthopedic specialist, with dyspalsia in both front legs and hip dysplasia grade 3-4.

His parents were Nikki and Julius. both as far as I know have no hip or elbow issues. I do not know about any of the other littermates.

It is a really heartbreaking thing to see in a dog so young.

He no longer bends his elbows at all. He kneels similar to a horse to reach things off the ground. When he lies on the floor the front legs are out straight pads facing each other. He will try to trot across the yard but usually ends up going face first. He will actually bring you his bone to hold so he can chew on it because he cannot rest on his elbows to hold the bone with his paws. It is terrible. I can't even tell you.

I know you can't predict dysplasia but you should be selective in breeding and when you know two dogs have produced a dysplastic pup don't breed those two dogs together again.

Re: Pup with dysplasia

Sorry to hear about your pup.....that really is a terrible thing for a pup to have at such a young age, before even being old enough to really be exercised vigorously, which any dog loves. What are your options at this point? Can anything be done surgery wise?

In the mean time are you providing him with good amounts of glucosamine and chondroitin? This may help his joint feel better I believe.

Re: Pup with dysplasia

I feel terrible for your pup and I dont mean to Hijack your thread but you mentioned that he would try to trot across the yard and end up going face first. Bella (5month old) would sometimes almost hit the floor during walks (face first). I noticed that it was always her right leg that seems to "miss a step" and she would almost hit the floor at times. Is that symptom of dyplasia? I am bringing my 2 puppies to the vet tomorrow to have them spayed and neutered. I guess I will get a X-ray done while I am there. I am not currently working right now so money is kind of tight. I was wondering if it is expensive to have x-rays done. Thanks again and good luck with your pup. Hopefully something can be done surgery wise!!!

Re: Pup with dysplasia

Diesel,
I am so sorry to hear about your puppy. Did you discuss your findings with the breeder?

imjuss2nasty,
Fees for films may vary by local. We paid $300 back in April to recheck Greta's hips.

Re: Pup with dysplasia

Ohhhh.....It will be heartbreaking when we see our dogs suffer from this kind of ailments.

Breeders should not breed dogs with HD. Why don't they understand?

Re: Pup with dysplasia

It was a couple hundred for the x rays. I do believe it is the dysplasia that causes him to go face first. He does not bend his elbows so his paws kind of drag and he trips. But I'm not sure every dog is different, could just be puppy clumsy

I have attempted to contact the breeder and he won't return my calls or emails anymore....funny he did before I told him the dog's diagnosis. So I have finally grudgingly, and angrily given up on that.

Given that he has four bad tires so to speak and they are already as bad as they are I guess the short answer is no. Maybe if we had unlimited funds, but no. We will keep him going as long as we can and when he can no longer get around or appears to be in pain we will know it's time......way too soon, it's so sad. He is such a beautiful, smart dog

Re: Pup with dysplasia

I am very sad reading about your puppy! I found out Tex has sub-luxated hip dysplasia when he was 1 (he's 2 1/2 now) and it breaks my heart when he limps after he has been running around but your puppy's symptoms really break my heart and brings tears to my eyes. Is there anything in your contract with your breeder about hips/elbows? It is really sickening when a breeder is 'oh, so nice' until something bad comes up with one of their puppies!!!! Has the vet suggested any meds to give him? Please keep us posted........

I'm very sorry to hear about your pup. I went thru this with Pepper when she was 6 months. I hope you can at least get your pup comfortable. :-(

Re: Pup with dysplasia

Diesel Im so sorry about your pup, I know what it feels like:( I had my 6mth old xrayed a few days ago after eye surgery due to a limp. Well shes also going to require leg surgery due to ED in a few wks. We are waiting for her to recuperate from this surgery first.

I also gave up on the breeder...but then thats another story:(

Ive found amazing advise here. And as so many have pointed out...its tough but manageable.Has your vet discussed surgery options with you?
Im anxious about what the future holds for my Lola recovery wise,so Im reading everything I can here. Its so hard when you have a pup just busting with energy just to end up seeing them in pain if you let them just "be" a puppy. Im trying to find alternative ways to keep her busy other than bouncing around. Training, new chew toys, and when shes able swimming to avoid her being so restless. She cant handle 1/2 mile without limping. I feel for your pup its so hard for them.

I wish you & your pup the best of luck.My prayers are with both of you.

Re: Pup with dysplasia

Geez you guys sure have to pay a lot for xrays. Mine were only $50.00 extra when we had Matilda spayed. Glad I'm in Wisconsin!

Re: Pup with dysplasia

This is my first post, thanks for having me.

I'm reading this thread as my new puppy is limping and OCD was mentioned by the vet today.......

Maybe I can give some hope from previous experience.....

My last dog was a German Shepard who was diagnosed with HD at 9 months. His case was so bad that a family vet said he would be lucky to make two years old. I decided to just let him be and see how he would deal with it. He was walked every day, and never on lead so he could romp around as much as he wanted. He lived a very happy, active life and passed away from bloat a couple of years ago at the ripe old age of ten.

I hope you are as lucky as I was.

Re: Pup with dysplasia

$50.00 for x rays is awesome. Did that include anesthesia? Guess that's what we get for living in Connecticut.

We are not doing surgery for Diesel. The vet does not think that it is feasable at this point.

He takes dosequin daily and rimadyl when needed.

He is still happy, he is spoiled rotten and he has all the neighbors wrapped around his paw. :)

She was already under anesthesa for the spaying so yes that was included. I believe the whole surgery and xrays was $280.00.

I apologize for jumping in here, but I am desparate for some help with my 6 month old female. What were the symptoms with Pepper. I have only had Sheps in the past. My pup can hardly get up, very weak in her hind legs and limps on her one front leg. She went to the vet this week and got a chiropractic adjustment which seems to have helped the tembling that was occuring in her front legs. She does not want to go out and only stands there when I do get her out. But when my son comes home, his dog, she wants to romp and play. How can she do it or is it just her coping with her condition just to please him. I have not had x-rays, but I have concluded all of this is not good.

I'm sorry to hear this. My Pepper is lame again right now and has been for a couple weeks.
You should first take your pup for xrays. You really won't know for sure until you do.
With Pepper she just started limping one day when she came in from the snow.I at first thought it was her knee.
Oh what a girlie, she probably does want to please your son I hope you get to the bottom of this. Good luck.
