Bumps on mouth/chin area

Ok, I have another question for all you Rottie owners. In the last week or so, my Rottie has developed some small-- almost like zit/pimple spots on her mouth/chin area. I wasn't going to make a big deal about it but just a few minutes ago, I see another one developing! Have any of you had this happen with your pups?

I am going to try to attach two pictures I took.

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

I can't see your pictures, but it is probably dog acne. You can do a Google search on "dog acne" and you can see some photos. Ours had it and the vet said it was from using plastic bowls; and when we stopped using plastic bowls, it went away.

Some other dogs on here have had it without using the plastic bowls though, so I guess the causes can vary. You could probably call your vet and mention dog acne and maybe they could give you something for it. Like I said, ours was from using plastic bowls, so all we had to do was stop using them and it went away.

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

From what you are describing, it does sound like acne or as I call it "puppy zits". The plastic bowl thing, IMO, is a myth. I have never used anything but stainless steal that get washed after every meal and still have had puppy zits. The onset of acne is brought on by hormonal changes. This could be adolescents or pre-estrus. The one thing you need to watch for is that it does not turn into a staph infection. If the acne does not clear fairly quickly on its own and appears to be spreading and getting worse (a pussy infected look), you will need to take your dog to the vet and have it put on antibiotics.

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

Thanks, Tmatty. You know, it just occured to me that she was outside for a few hours yesterday while I was sitting in the sun. I wonder if she is chasing bumble bees and getting stung? Either way, I'm glad this isn't an extremely abnormal thing.

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

Our dog had pimples on her chin and the first thing the vet asked was if she ate out of plastic bowls. She did, we switched to stainless steel, and the problem went away.

the other thing is maybe are they mosquito bites? I could not see the pictures, but you did say you were outside yesterday?

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

Lola was loaded with puppy pimples under her chin and around her mouth. They itched and when she scratched them they would bleed. Vet said to use strydex(sp) medicated acne pads. Just rub over pimples several times a day. Pimples gone, happy rottie.

It is a fact that plastics leach...it is not good for people to re-heat food in plastic dishes, baby bottles....heck your not even supposed to drink out of water bottles that sat in your car all day!

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

Thank you all for replying! My rottie is almost 6yrs old-- so not sure if that has anything to do with it. I don't use plastic bowls. I read a long time ago about the germs, etc that can come from plastic bowls, so I too switched to stainless steel bowls 2 years or so ago.

Sorry the pictures aren't working. I think it is the work of the moderators/web master person. The link to my pictures on Photobucket do not have "no spamming" in their link--as they do in my orginal post. Bummer. But, I will take the advice you all have given and check out doggie acne pictures online.

I'm so glad I found this message board! Thanks so much!

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

Again, I appreciate all the advice but does anyone use holistic medicine with their dogs? And possibly have a natural way to rid doggie acne? Sure, humans use Benzoyl Proxide but I'm sorry to say, its a very toxic chemical that can do damage not only to your skin but to your internal organs. So, since I have become much more aware of toxic chemicals and refuse to put them in my body, it is only right I do the same with my pup! I'd love to hear if anyone has any natural/oranic remedies!!

Thanks again, guys and gals!

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

I had a dog with the same problem, I started cleaning his face after he ate and used some vinegar on the sores, didn't bother him and they cleared up. Now he just gets his face cleaned up after food time and he comes in with his towel, just to let me know I have a job to do. Another dog I had use to use my furniture to wipe his face and chin after he ate. He was too funny. I would never use plastic or ceramic, stainless steel is the way to go.

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

If you gently wipe your dog's face with a damp soft cloth after he eats, this should help tremendously in preventing further problems.

I have a friend who shows Danes - her harlequins are prone to doggy acne - and she swears by wiping their nose/chin/mouth area with a cotton swab soaked in witch hazel.

If the bumps are bleeding/broken, I'd be careful about using vinegar or alcohol on them - that would burn like crazy.

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

Thanks for the natural remedies! My dog will sometimes wipe her face along our furniture-- or even us if she is next to us. lol. I had read about apple cider vinegar but I may just try plain old vinegar--since the apple cider vinegar smells horrible!

The spots are still there but they don't look nearly as noticeable. Hopefully they will clear up soon. We are now onto another issue with my dog. She has developed some bumps around her eye! WTF?! I am going to try to make it a habit of cleaning her eye off with a warm wash rag and see if it helps.

Agreed on the vinegar, never would use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide is another thought.

Re: Bumps on mouth/chin area

If these bumps are spreading around her face, I think it's time for a visit to the vet.
