Non-Prescription Wormer Any ones that work?

Nemex and D-Worm are suppose to safe. My vet wants $58.00 for 2 1/2 tabs of Nemex but I have seen them offered at $6.00 each online. Anyone used non-prescrition wormers that were safe for hooks and rounds?

Re: Non-Prescription Wormer Any ones that work?

you can ask your vet for a prescription to buy a dewormer elsewhere such as a catalog or petsmart or you can try getting panacur or safeguard(same thing, made by same manufacturer intervet).
panacur suspension is sold in horse feed stores and for dogs it is 1cc per 5 lbs.
we use panacur in suspension or powder.

Nemex 2 is very effective and safe as long as you follow directions of course.

As your vet if that would work for your situation first. My vet has always been happy to even order Nemex 2 for me when expecting pups

Re: Non-Prescription Wormer Any ones that work?

I just looked in foster and smith catalog and nemex tabs and nemex-2 liquid are listed as non-prescription wormers. Would they be available in stores at a reduced price?

Re: Non-Prescription Wormer Any ones that work?

the only way to know for sure is to see if the stores even carry it.
i know you can get it thru doctors foster and smith and even try kv vet supplies.
but they will only help if it is hooks and rounds. for whips and tapes you will need panacur and/or praziquantel.

Re: Non-Prescription Wormer Any ones that work?

Online entirelypets.com sells nemex tabs at $6.00 each. What's wrong with d-worm by farnam 12.00. It has a single ingredient pyrantel 2 tabs for a lrage dog, again probably 2 1/2 tabbs for my dog and it won't cost me $58.00 now and again in 2-3 weeks.

Re: Non-Prescription Wormer Any ones that work?

again, depending on what worm you want to deworm for, the ingredient.
pyrantel pomeate only does hooks and rounds. praziquantel does tapes.
panacur does hooks, rounds, whips and a species of tapes. drontal plus does all.
read the ingredient and what you need to deworm.
alot of places sell by the bottle and it gets expensive, but if you find a site you trust that sells individual depending on dogs weight, then it's another option for you.

Re: Non-Prescription Wormer Any ones that work?

Farnam d-worm is at all petsmart and pets plus stores. It is a single ingredient (same as nemex) pyrantel 113mg per tab. My dog is 125 pounds and would require 2 1/2 tabs. You can buy them for $13.00 for two tabs in a package. I asked the tech at banfield clinic in petsmart, what do you use for roundworms? she said we use the same thing you are looking at pyrantel, but in liquid form. She looked it up and agreed 2 1/2 tabs for a 125 pound dog. I guess my only concern is that OTC stuff, human or animal, gets bad reputation for not working, not having the ingredients that are on the label, you know? It's a huge savings over retail vet prices, but I want the product to work, you know? Also, Rocky is showing signs of biting the air or some call them focal seizures, not sure yet, maybe OCD so I have to be careful. And that is why I was so interested in a plain simple deworner with pyrantel, supposed to be safe.

Re: Non-Prescription Wormer Any ones that work?

I just read in Dr. Bruce Fogels guide for home vet care that he recommends Nemex (script) or D-worm (OTC) for hooks and rounds. They both contain 113.5 mg of Pyrantel per tablet. Cost is $60 for Nemex and $15 for D-worm by Farnam, a horse and cattle supplier. Just wanted to put that out there.

Re: Non-Prescription Wormer Any ones that work?

I was told by a Canine nutritionist that I could use Diatomaceous Earth for my Cat that is constantly getting worms from eating the prey it kills. She said to just add to the Cats food, so if it's safe for a Cat I'm sure it would be OK for a dog. Ask your Vet or do some research first and ask experts as this was just a casual conversation I had. I have not tried it on my cat yet...but, I am going to try.
