Hip Dysplasia or "fell asleep" My dog has starting limping on one back leg rite after he gets up. He will walk it off in no time and can play, jump, and run fast with no gait issues. I havent heard him yelp yet and after moving it around and pressing on it no signs of pain . Could it be his leg falling asleep?

Re: Hip Dysplasia or "fell asleep" He is around 2 and a half so he is still pretty young . He just started very recently and its not consistent at all he can lay down and get up and be just fine or lay down and get up and limp . No, there has been no bunny hopping at all because it seems its only one hip that is doing this .

Re: Hip Dysplasia or "fell asleep" Unfortunately, age has no relevance. My rottie was diagnosed at 9mos. The true test would be an xray but a Vet can get a good idea from the walk too. Like a run is a 'bunny hop', the walk is a 'swishing' of the hips. My guy can be stiff when he gets up from lying down especially in the winter.

Re: Hip Dysplasia or "fell asleep" It could be an ACL tear. We adopted an 18 month old rottie from the pound and he had the same symptoms. It is especially noticable after he gets up, and he holds one rear leg up when standing. When he walks or runs it is barely noticible. We had xrays and the vet did a manual exam on him and he was diagnosed with the ACL tear. (hes set for surgery on the 25th of June) The xrays showed mild HD, but his limp is due to the ligament tear. With HD, the symptoms come on more gradually, and unless the dog is overweight, the pain and arthritis dont show up until the dog is older (per our vet). The ACL will not show up on xray, the doc has to do a manual exam.....our boy was anesthesized because he was in pain and wouldnt tolerate manipulation of the limb. An xray will show if he has HD. Our boy has mild HD in the right hip, and doc says he will eventually develop arthritis. Good luck with your boy, and please keep us posted on him!
