Rottweiler Diabetic Diets

hi, first time poster. i have a 5 y/o female, spayed rottie, tina. tina was just diagnosed a month ago. she had surgery in oct. 2007 so i figure between then and now she developed the diabetes (because they did a blood panel for surtgery and she was fine) the only symptoms she had were all of a sudden excessive drinking of water and excessive peeing. that was only for 1-week. i changed her diet immediately to variety raw chicken patties and cut out the treats and the peeing and drinking stopped. she never vomited or had diarrhea. i also give her 2 slices of eziekeil4.9 low glycemic bread
4gr protein/.5 gr fat/ 3gr fiber, and she seems to be doing just fine. she has also lost over 10lbs (she was way overweight at 128lbs) and we walk 3x/day.

but vet says she needs to be on insulin, blood curve was between 288-389 over a five hour glucose testing period.
she started off on .3 units 2x/day. then when i kept getting negative keto-diastix urine readings vet said to go to .2 units 1x/day. then the keytones went to "trace" and now she's back to .3 humulin-n 2x/day. her sugar and ketones have been negative for the past 5 days. vet wants to put her on a Rx diet. i want to keep her on raw and high grade, low fat kibble. i am looking at innova 18% protein/8% fat/5% fiber, wellness 33%prt./10%fat/8.5% fiber.

so i really would like some suggestions for food,.i DO NOT want to go with the vet's commercial Rx foods.

also, i use 25 5/8 bd needles. it still freaks me out to inject her, but, ofcourse i do it. any suggestions for smaller needles or are these just fine and i will just have to get used to it?

thanks and my tina thanks you too!

Re: Rottweiler Diabetic Diets

I have a large male 6 yr old Rottie diagnosed 6/13 with diabetes. Came to us three months ago at 180 lbs. Seemed to be great (except for weight) got him down to about 159 in about a month. But all of sudden in the last ten days he lost almost 20 lbs and very ill very quickly. Only symptom was excessive thirst for a few days but being in the 105+ degree heat range right now, didn't notice significant symptoms until drastic sudden weight loss. So he is on 2x injections and I am actively searching for best dog food. It's only been about 4 days on injections but now he barely eats. Seems hungry. Any recommendations, tips totally needed !! thanks much

Re: Rottweiler Diabetic Diets

I would like to know what you found out about a good diet for your Rottie. My 10-1/2-year-old male rottie just had his spleen removed for a tumor and 3 weeks later developed diabetes (this week). He is on 40 units of long-acting insulin Lente 2 x a day and we are trying to bring his glucose down. I have just kept him on his same diet of Blue (all natural, no additives) sweet potato and fish. Just after 1 dose of insulin, he is eating better and not drinking as much water or urinating as much. But I would like to change his diet to high protein/low glycemic. My vet suggested kangaroo, which I am going to check into. Thanks for any information you can send my way! Alice
