Urine Infection?

I just got my second Rottie. My first one lived 13.5 yrs and was put to sleep in Jan 2007. I have had my new Rottie, female since Sunday May 18th. Since I brought her home from the breeder, by the way she just turned 12 weeks old, she urinated in her crate while sleeping on the way home. I did not think much of it, since I thought maybe she was nervous.

Well, she did it again that night and has been doing it at least 1-4 times a day since I have had her. I will take her out, she is good about going potty outside. Not be 30 min later, when she naps, there is a pool of urine where she lays, it is on her leg and under her body.

On Friday May 23rd, I took her to the vet in the morning, they managed to get a urine sample and said that she has a urinary tract infection. That probably explains why she drinks soooooooooooo much water throughout the day and why she urinates at least 14+ times a day.

Do you think that the urinating while sleeping is related to the urinary tract infection or is there a problem that I should be worried about with her bladder or interals.

Keep in mind that this is a very expensive puppy and her parents are heavily titled from Germany. The father cost his breeder $60k and my breeder paid $40k for the mother. So, the pups were very expensive themselves. I got her because I planned on breeding her for one litter, that way I could have another pup for me and my brother down the road as well as one for my parents. Thanks

Post Re: Urine Infection?

A bladder infection would explain why she was leaking urine. Hopefully the medication will help?
This is off topic, but I do hope that your breeder is insisting you show and title you dog, and have all of the health certs done before you plan on breeding her?
Kind of funny to already have plans on breeding this wee puppy, when you don't even know what she will grow into.

There can be structural abnormalities that cause leaking urine, such as an ectopic ureter. If this happens to be the case for your puppy, it is usually accompanied by a UTI that will clear up and recur and needs surgical intervention to correct. My puppy had a UTI that was tough to clear up when she was very young and this was considered as a possibility, but turned out not to be the case after all. Vets will generally treat the UTI first, and then take the diagnostics further if it's deemed necessary.

$60,000.00 for the sire and $40,000.00 for the dam???? Surely this is a gross, gross, gross exaggeration. The only animals that are worth that kind of money are ones that can earn it back in hard cash - such as a winning racehorse (who wins cold hard CASH, not just ribbons) and can produce the same.

Re: Urine Infection?

I was thinking the same, moondog. I've read that there was a Pekingese in the Guiness Book of World Records who sold for 36K in 1988, but can't find any other data.

Well, you do the math...Stud fee charge of $2500 and over the last two years studed 57 times. That is a collection rate of over $140,000. Its always a coin toss, but sounds like the owner of the sire did pretty well on this one.

So he's got somewhere around 300 puppies on the ground in two year's time? Now that's not just gross, that's grossly irresponsible. How old is this "stud"? It makes ZERO difference what his qualifications are, NO stud dog should be used that much. He's littered the world without a thought to what is being produced, which is evident in the fact that ALL 300 puppies are too young to be proven. If this is the established breeding program, you got your puppy from nothing more than a commercial PUPPY MILL on a quest for the "almighty" dollar. Disgusting.

I find it interesting that you're more concerned with defending the indefensible than you are with your puppy's medical condition. Not one word about her UTI?

Aren't you a piece of work?

If your puppy wasn't so dreadfully expensive, bred from such expensive dogs, would you still be concerned about her UTI?

Would you be concerned if your dog was ill, no matter how it cost? You are a piece of work yourself, you dont know me at all. How would you feel if I started ripping into you? You sound really mature yourself. Why not send me an email or PM with a question instead of your piping off like a childish grade school bulley.

Re: Urine Infection?

Anne,

First of all, lets get some stuff straight here. This topic is getting far off tract. I made the mistake and I apoligize for mentioning the cost of the sire and dame of my puppy. Looking back there was no need to mention it. I started this post to try and figure out any recommendtions or to see if anyone here has experienced what I am going thru with my puppy.

If I did not care or want the best for the pup, I would not be here asking for advice. I find it very troubling that there are are people here that find the need to put in there two sense about dogs and the price that they cost when in fact they have no idea about them, their accomplishments, health or ratings.

Either way, I feel that I was meering asking questions and answering stupid responses to facts unrelated to a urine infection. Some may feel I insulted others here, I feel that I was insulted as well, thus resulting in my responses.

Anyways, back to the TOPIC about the urinary tract infection. Thank you for asking, she is getting much better. She went to the VET and does have a UTI. I have been giving her medication and in the last 3 days I have seen a major improvement in her urination while sleeping. Sunday it only happened once and yesterday none at all. I think that the UTI was in the cause. Only time will tell.
