Sanitizing backyard after giardia???

My 14 week old pup tested positive for giardia about a week ago, she had no symptoms so the vet thinks it was maybe just a transient. Anyways, we put her on panacur for 3 days and retested her, and it came back negative. Well, now my 2 year old boy's test just came back positive for it. So we are starting him on medication today. I have no idea where they picked it up, since we never go to lakes, and they have not been in a kennel, and the puppy has never been to the dog park or nay park for that matter.

So my question is, besides picking up their poop in the backyard, is there a safe way to sanitize/decontaminate the backyard ( I have read the parasite can live for a while outside the body). Any suggestions will help. I am thinking maybe some kind of bleach mixture? Thank you!

Re: Sanitizing backyard after giardia???

I didn't sanitize our yard...I just picked up the poop (if it was firm enough ). But I know the bleach mixture works well.

A dog can also get Giardia by eating another animals poop....one who is also infected. A cat, raccoon, dog, really anything.

What is the bleach mixture? Ingredients? Is it necessary to use something like that?

Re: Sanitizing backyard after giardia???

I would just do a mixture like the bottle says...maybe 1 cup per gallon of water?

I didn't find it necessary...but if your puppy likes to eat dog poop, I would reconsider. They have to 'eat' the bacteria to be re-infested. Make sure there are no puddles in your yard; runoff can carry poop/ Giardia bacteria to puddles that could look refreshing to dogs.

I have never seen our puppy or our 2 yr. old boy eat poop, but you never know.

Excuse my ignorance, but does it say what to do on the bleach bottle?

Yes, it has different mixtures for all purpose cleaning solutions...laundry...ect. I would do the all purpose solution (just enough to kill the bacteria).

Re: Sanitizing backyard after giardia???

Hi my dog had also had Giardia a while back and I used the bleach to clean of where it went. I mixed about a cup of bleach with 4-5 cups of water and put it in a spray bottle. I sometimes still use it but not to often. However I still use it always on the pooper scooper I use. I spray it and then rinse it off with the hose. I also spray it in the area where I clean his pooper scooper. It worked well for me so I'd give it a try::))
