Nervous-Spay while in Heat I made an appointment for Jaycee to get spayed today. She started coming into heat a couple days ago. I'm a little nervous. Normally I would have waited, however, we have an intact male blue heeler and do not have the means (what I feel is necessary) to keep them seperated, and the last thing I want to happen is to have a litter of rotten heelers. I talked to the vet before I made the decision and I know the risks are a bit higher, but I felt like I had to take the lesser of two evils. Her last heat, BF and I did not live together and I had a fenced yard, so keeping them seperated was no problem. So, now I'm waiting on a call from the vet to let me know she's ok...Anyone else had their bitch spayed while in heat? Please no bad stories until I get the call...

Re: Nervous-Spay while in Heat I forgot to had, I'm also having her hips xrayed again to stay proactive on any hip problems. So, hoping those results are good as well. She hasn't limped in a long time, but she seems to be a little stiff now and again when getting up from a good nap.

| Re: Nervous-Spay while in Heat many vets don't like to spay a bitch in heat...especially large breeds...because they tend to bleed more, are more swollen and sensitive. it can be done...just riskier. hope you get the call all is ok.

Re: Nervous-Spay while in Heat My vet doesn't like too either. But understood the pickle I'm in. See, I don't have a fenced in yard anymore and the dogs go to work with my BF during the day. His work day is really long and isn't able to come home and let one out if we were to leave her at home. And I work 100 miles away, so that really wasn't an option. Nor did we even have anyone that I felt comfortable/or was able to watch her during the day. She just started to spot, so I'm hoping that will make things not quite so bad.

| Re: Nervous-Spay while in Heat Unfortunately, I haven't gone through this with either of my dogs. I think you know your dogs best. I know what's it like waiting for the "all's well" call from the vet.

Re: Nervous-Spay while in Heat Our girl Diva was a rescue, and we got her when she was in heat. We did have her spayed while she was still in heat as we do not have the facilities to manage a bitch in heat. (The scent of a bitch in heat puts our livestock at risk from stray dogs, which are a serious problem in this area.) We had no issues. The cost of the spay was higher than it would have been had she not been in heat. The only little problem we had with her spay was keeping her on restricted activity until the sutures were removed. :) She was ready to run and play within a couple of days. Hope all goes well with your girl. Lynda

Re: Nervous-Spay while in Heat I spayed my female cat while she was pregnant. I know it is differnt but I had the same fears. I didnt know she was pregnant or that she had even went into heat yet. My vet called me and told me she was pregnant. I told them spay her anyway. Her brother was the father and I had him neutered as well that day. She was fine the next day. She was only 8mnths old

Re: Nervous-Spay while in Heat I couldn't stand it any longer, I called to check on her. The vet couldn't come to the phone, but they said she did well and he will call me as soon as he can...(HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF)

Re: Nervous-Spay while in Heat My vet will spay a dog in heat, and pregnant. It does cost more and it is a more difficult surgery but I haven't heard of any problems that a normal spay doesn't have. If your vet is good and comfortable, as he should be since he agreed to spay her, then you should have no problems. Our other local vet refuses heat spays.

Re: Nervous-Spay while in Heat Jaycee is doing well. He had to make the incision a little longer than normal, but he was thankful there wasn't more bleeding. She had just started spotting this past weekend. She's still at the vet's, they keep them overnight for monitoring and I will pick her up after work. So, I am very thankful. He's an excellent vet and one that is excellent at explaining things. He did however say her xrays show HD in her right leg, which I kinda expected, so when I pick her up we are going to talk about things we can do for her. He said I'm already on the right track with her weight and excercise. I keep her pretty slim...So, all in all, good news/with bad news that was expected. Now I just can't wait to go and get her! Thanks for all the well wishes!
