leaking

I have a 9 months old female who leaks when she's laying down. At first I thought she drank too much h2o and couldn't hold that much. then she stopped leaking for a while. Now she started again even with me controlling her water intake. I figure it's a sphincter issue or possible uti. she's going to the vet tomorrow.

anyone ever had this happen, if it is a sphincter can it be controlled with medication? any adviice????

Re: leaking

My first girl had this problem, but at a much older age (about 8 years old). It didn't happen very often, so I just chalked it up to her age. My second girl suffered from many UTI's, but I don't recall her having any leaking while she was lying down.

Good luck at the vet, and keep us posted.

Re: leaking

I had this problem with my male puppy a while back. He wouldn't really leak while he was laying down, but he would be walking from one room to another and would leak...it was strange.

We tested for uti but it came back negative. Later on for a regular fecal sample we found out he had giardia. Giardia can cause your dog to drink excessively and pee more, and once he got on his meds and the giardia cleared up he stopped leaking!

Re: leaking

Yes my pup has been leaking since age 4 months. It is a sphincter problem in her case.

Apparently if you allow them to have their first heat before you spay this can resolve the problem in 50% of cases.

Propalin syrup works really well and I have got my girl on a minimum dose with great results. I am hoping that her first heat will resolve things but if not well she will probably be on medication for the rest of her life.

There is surgery that can also help.

Re: leaking

Lottie had this problem within 2 months of being spayed at 6 months, we used propalin, but not all the time, she is 5 now and it only happens about twice a year but it is always when she is asleep. After speaking to several vets, they all seem to recomend spaying after the first season.

Re: leaking

Molly began having this shortly after we rescued her @ 11 months. For a while, I thought is was drool from her licking her feet until the "spots" got bigger and bigger. I did notice that if she slept on her back with her legs splayed out in all directions -- no problem. But if she is on her side she seems to be putting pressure on the "nozzle" and I'd find the evidence.

Don't know if propalin is the same thing my vet calls PPA, but that's what she is on and it is like night and day. As in if I fail to get it refilled in time, I'm washing the bedspread, sheets, blanket and mattress pad.

Re: leaking

Yes Propalin is PPA. The saviour of incontinent bitches. My girl is the same, she only leaks when lying on her side, it is a positional thing where the sphincter has no pressure on it to retain the urine and it just flows out.

Re: leaking

I had a problem with my Ridgeback. After she was spade she 'leaked'. She got spade so young that I don't know if it was the surgery or if she would have turned out that way or not. I got the pills for her but was also very very strict with her water. There was absolutely no water after 8 pm. And I took her out every night between 10 and 11. In the mornings she got a little bit of water and that had to last her until I got home from work, then more water, and outside. I just got accustomed to taking her out several times a day and monitoring her water intake, so I'm actually not sure how well the pills worked because my goal was to keep her pretty much empty.

The best command I ever taught her was 'go pee'.

Re: leaking

I too have had this problem with older bitches.
I dont like Propalin and only use it as a LAST resort.
I use a herbal pill (with no side effects!!) they are from Dorwest Herbs and they are mixed vegetable tablets I give a large dose to start with then reduce gradually until I find the 'right' dose for thar particular dog
Have used them on lots of different breeds in the boarding kennels all with good results
