Icon9 It happened again :(

We were just sitting there petting Nisha when she started looking franticly from side to side; all of a sudden BAM, again, total freak out...WAY worse than ever before. She almost BIT me in her fear; she even peed, pooped, and anal glanded all over the kitchen (while trying to climb the cabinets). It lasted longer than ever, I had to DRAG her to her kennel screaming and thrashing...I was afraid if I didn't she would injur herself. She tried to jump out of every window, tried to run up the walls, and screamed uncontrollably. All this combined with INTENSE foaming. :(

She has been fine since Saturday afternoon. I called the emergency vet; they said to wait until morning. I am going to check her for ticks, but I just don't know. I feel sick to my stomach, something is going on that is just not right.

She hasn't been out unsupervised since Friday night; no chance of another "toad lick". I just want to know what is wrong with my baby; she was the most scared dog I have EVER seen. I am going to the vet 1st thing in the morning (9:00 am).

She doesn't even know who I am.

Re: It happened again :(

Did you ever find out how long the toad toxin may linger in her body? This has to be terribly frightening for you both when she freaks out like that.
I hope you get some answers to what is causing this.
Good Luck!

Re: It happened again :(

I am searching like crazy; I just read something that said only one hour!?! If this is true, I don't know whats wrong. I guess it could be anything...rabies, toad poisoning, lyme disease, brain tumor. I don't know what to do .

Re: It happened again :(

Remember, everything you read on the internet is not the gospel truth!
Did the vet draw blood the last time?
Has she calmed down?

Re: It happened again :(

She has "calmed" down; but still clearly agitated. We let her out of her kennel, but decided to put her back in because she was slinking around the house and was even scared (crouched down) at our approach. I think the safest place for her is the kennel.

I know, everything I read isn't true. I only found one site that "claimed" the effects lasted one hour. All others do not mention any time frame.

I wish someone could tell me what was wrong; I know I will not sleep at all tonight.

She was fine for almost TWO days !

No the vet didn't draw blood; there is no way to tell "frog poisoning" by any tests (info via internet)...I am a little mad that she didn't. I am going to insist on every test out there. Do you recommend any specific ones. I think FrontierRots listed a couple in my last thread; I will look up the names of those.

Re: It happened again :(

I believe approx 100-120 bpm for an adult med-large breed dog.

edited to add above is not correct...adult dog is 70-160, giant breeds 60-140, puppies up to 220 bpm

Re: It happened again :(

Ohh Nishasmom.. I feel so bad for you. I couldn't even guess what is causing this. All I know from your posts is how much you love your dog. I know you won't be satisfied until she is x-rayed, ultrasounded, poked and prodded to the nth degree. All we can do is hope for the best.. and that is exactly what i am doing for you. Get well Nisha.

Re: It happened again :(

I am so sorry to hear this. I really thought it was the toad and it was a done deal.
Is there such a thing as flashbacks with that?
My cousin had a rottie who would search out the toads, but he only had good reactions from what she said, he just got goofy and happy.
I am scared right along with you, Please keep us posted as to what in the world is going on. I am totally stumped. Especially since this comes on so quickly and no warning.

Hang in there,

Sharon

Re: It happened again :(

Aw, geez. Did the vet check her eyes? I wonder if there's something going on with her vision. I hate to say the brain tumor words, but it sounds like that could be another thing that needs to be ruled out.

It does sound like she's safest in her crate, and you could cover it if that helps her calm down. Be careful, too...in this state she could bite you without meaning to just out of sheer terror.

Please let us know how she is in the morning.

Re: It happened again :(

Thank you all; we are counting down the minutes till the vet opens. You are right...we wont be satisfied until every test is done to figure out what is wrong.

We did think maybe something was wrong with her eyes; not sure what the vet actually checked last time. Since it was an "emergency" visit, the exam was done in the back .

I will let everyone know what I find out.

Re: It happened again :(

I am thinking of you and sending good thoughts. Your fear and worry comes right through your words - and rightfully so, we would all feel the same way.

Hang in there, let us know as soon as you hear something.

I feel so badly for you and Nisha. What scary experiences for both of you. Praying for you and Nisha today. Hopefully your visit to the vet will give you some answers. Best luck to you.

Poor, poor Nisha and Nisha's mommy! I wish I had an answer. I hate to hear of a suffering dog (and parent).
