Re: It happened again :(

I do know MUCH about human seizures/epilepsy.
I also know a bit about dogs.
I saw the video.
Your dog is not right!
The symptoms are openly and I don’t need a diagnose.
Your dog is so stressed and she suffers.

Re: It happened again :(

Damp, what do you mean by stressed?

She plays like crazy and is so care free at all other times .

Nisha is an inside dog; she has never been left outside alone.
Though if she was outside during a thunderstorm even with supervision, a proxy lightening strike is possible; that is not a direct hit but traveling on the ground.

MRI's are ~$1,000-$1,500 because general anesthesia is required.

Re: It happened again :(

After watching that, it doesn't look like a vision thing, it looks like a sound sensitivity thing....like she's hearing frightening noises in her head and doesn't know where they're coming from or how to get away from them.

I'd definitely ask for a referral to a neuro specialist.

Re: It happened again :(

After seeing the clip, I have to say that our last rottie had a very similar reaction to fireworks. When she was younger we had brought her to fireworks on several occasions and she had no reaction. Then we found out that while we were away at work the neighbors kids would shoot a cap gun a her through the bedroom window. The next time that she heard even the slightest pop or whistle of a firework she would have total freak outs. She didn't bark at all but would whine intensely climb the walls, try to get under furniture, extreme panting, her eye would bug out, and she would have absolutely no reaction to anything we said or did. One time she was outside and she just took off down the street. All of these actions were completely out of character for her. It was kind of like her brain swelled up and she just lost her mind.

Maybe there is something that Nisha is reacting to that is almost if not completely unrecognizable to you. My husband even mentioned that she may be extremely sensitive to being near high voltage lines. After an electrical storm there may be a similar sensation. Even the hum of those big halogen lights could trigger another hyper reaction if she's already sensitized to it.

Just a thought. I really hope you can figure this out and find some peace for you both.

Re: It happened again :(

Nishasmom,
My last rottie female had seizures both petit and grand mal. Your dog does not appear to be having a grand mal, but the behavior during and after is reminiscent of the petit mals I saw, the upset after is very characteristic of a seizure. I was lucky and our vet made a diagnoses quite soon and treatment was started while diagnostic tests for other potential problems were done. When it happened to us, I too initially thought of poisoning. I am sure you will take the video to your vet. I wanted however to give you some positive thoughts as I know you are quite concerned. Our dog was treated with Mysoline (an anti-convulsant), while we tried to wean her off it after a year the seizures returned and she had to stay on it for the rest of her life, which was 13 years. She continued to be a very active, healthy and happy well behaved dog. The only thing that slowed her down was old age. I hope things go well with your pup.

Re: It happened again :(

Poor girl she looks absolutely petrified of something.

Have the vets checked out central nervous system its the only thing that I can think of that hasnt been mentioned before.

Hope you can find something soon that must be absolutely terrifying for you having to watch your baby go through that and be able to do nothing to ease her distress.

My thoughts are with you at this time.

Re: It happened again :(

Nisha is so beautiful.

Poor girl she looks afraid and confused.

I believe you said in an earlier post the vet ran some tests. Just wondering which ones? Just asking because I found this about diagnostic tests:

Among the recommended tests are: CBC, urinalysis, BUN, ALT, ALP, calcium, fasting blood glucose level, serum glucose level, serum lead level, fecal parasite or ova examination, and others if indicated. When the results of the examinations and tests have been analyzed, one of three conclusions will be drawn: a definitive diagnosis, a potential cause of seizures requiring further tests to confirm, or no suggestion of a cause.

If none of the above is conclusive then move on to these tests:

When further tests are required a complete data base should be done. This may include computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging; CSF analysis (cell count, protein levels, pressure), skull radiographs, and an EEG.

I also found this information that may be helpful:

* Protect your animal's environment.
Avoid exposing your pet to cigarette smoke, car exhaust, chemicals (especially fleas sprays, dips and collars, which affect the nervous system), and excessive stress or exertion (but moderate regular exercise is beneficial). Don't let your animal near an operating color TV or close to an operating microwave oven.

I sure hope you can find out real soon what is going on and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: It happened again :(

Thank you, I plan on printing this thread out and taking it to the vet Tuesday. I am going to have her look into everything mentioned here.

Not sure what exact tests were done...a full blood test, lyme/heartworm, and a urinalysis is what the vet told me.

After looking at the video, something really weird is going on! It almost looks like she is frightened out of her skin.
One thing I notice in the clip, was that she does not want to walk on the shiny floor...and only wants to stay on the carpet. What material is that floor? I wonder about some electrical charge going through it?

What I would do when/if she starts this again...is put her in the crate right away...take her collar and leash off, and cover the crate up with a sheet and turn out the lights. It would be good if you had a plastic crate...the metal may be conducting electricity?

I also would not try to sooth or comfort her (I know it's hard not to do) , but often it get's them even more worked up.

I've seen dogs zapped by e-collars behave this way....that's why I'm wondering if it's something electrical in your home??

Hope you get things figured out soon. She is a gorgeous girl.

Gina

Re: It happened again :(

Gina,
Our floors are stained concrete...I wonder how we would test for an electrical current; also, twice it has happened outside (grass).

We have stopped trying to soothe her (for the most part)...I mostly did it this time for the sake of the video. Usually we send her straight to her kennel and leave the room.

Just curious about when the last vaccine was given. I have been doing a lot of reading about adverse reactions to the rabies vax. Many DVM articles report these adverse s/e can happen some time after the vax is given and often can present as CNS symptoms.

I too hope you get some answers soon.
