Re: It happened again :(

Fostermom; Nisha is eating Wellness simple solutions (she had Giardia back in March and needed a "bland" diet). She is not eating raw, although I was thinking about starting.

As far as streams go, we visit parks where Nisha swims at least twice a week. They are more "rivers" than streams, but there are "stagnant" puddles or coves around sometimes.

What are you thinking with the water thing? We were thinking menongitus (sp?), but no fever.

I just remembered we changed our floor cleaner. Zep hardwood floor cleaner is what we started using (about a month ago?). I am starting to look into that...Nisha eats off the floor (puzzle balls).

Re: It happened again :(

I'm seeing parasites that infect the brain as being listed as causes of seizures...one obtained through raw meat..I'm just wondering if there are any that can be picked up by swimming in ponds/contaminated water...I remember someone had a thread several months back about their dog contracting something, ultimately died from it...but don't remember the name of the organism or whether that specific one could cause seizures...might ask the vet if that's a possibility, but I'm going to keep looking...just trying to think of ways she could have contracted something.

Re: It happened again :(

I looked up effects of hardwood floor cleaners (not specifically the brand you use) and found this:

Symptoms of Cleaning Product Poisoning:

While the actual symptom of cleaning product poisoning that
the animal exhibits depends on the type of substance to which
he or she was exposed, there are some general symptoms of
which you should be aware. For dogs and cats, these include:

*Anxiety
*Burns on the mouth and esophagus
*Central nervous system depressant
*Colic
*Coma
*Corneal damage
*Cough
*Excessive salivation
*Foaming at the mouth
*Hormonal changes
*Hyperthermia
*Muscle weakness
*Restlessness
*Seizures
*Shallow breathing
*Skin ulcers
*Slow respiration
*Vomiting

Attached is the website I found it from... It looks like they make a natural cleaner to prevent any of the side effects.

Re: It happened again :(

Thank you!! I called the Zep manufacturer; they couldn't tell me what their product would do to a pet...."they dont 'test' for that" ! We are not going to use it anymore, and see if that helps. There are many "pet safe" products out there, Jesse got this stuff as a 'sample' so we thought we would try it.

Thanks again!

Re: It happened again :(

You could call the animal poison control number and ask them about the cleaning product. Here's another pet poison control info place.

It's toxoplasmosis. Very rare for dogs to be infected, though, cats are much more likely, namely those who catch and eat wildlife. I suppose a dog who snacks on a litter box would be more susceptible than most. The meats most often found with contamination are pork, lamb, and venison and the parasite can be killed by freezing to 9 degrees F as well as by cooking thoroughly.

Re: It happened again :(

It seems to me to be something in the brain triggering these episodes. It does seem like a type of seizure but the answer to what is causing them? You did all blood work? So if it were menegititis it would show up. That was one of the things we thought at first may have been wrong with Ceasar before the tumor. Well the menigitis is curable at least. You would think if it were some kind of poison CBC numbers would be off at some point at least the WBC. I am really hoping she gets better and you find out what is causing this. It could be something really stupid that you are overlooking. I tell you when my Thor was down years ago, he had such bad arthritis that he wouldn't get up much, and I started using the powder sprinkle on the rugs and then vaccuming, all of a sudden the third lid which I never knew at the time became swollen! He looked a mess and all you could see was the lining of his eyes protruding. We called the emergency at the Univ. of Pa right away and found out it was the 3rd lid, and then to figure out what caused it? Process of elimination. what you are seeing is worse then Thor but however it is something doing this to her. I will keep looking on here to see if you have any luck. All the best, Debbie Ervin

Re: It happened again :(

Paige,

If you have hardwood floors you can clean them with White Vinegar in hot water - this is EXTREMELY effective, streak free and safe for dogs who eat off the floor.

Motholated spirits and hot water is another floor cleaner that is also streak free and very effective, not sure about animals who eat of the floor though.

These 2 tips were given to me by the person who pollished our floorboards in our old house, he also said that it doesn't take the polish off like some harsh cleaners do....

I think the disease that comes from stagnant water that you are thinking of is leptospirosis.
Was she vaccinated for this? There was a discussion on this vaccine recently.
I know my vet did not vaccinate Dodge after asking me if he has access to stagnant/skunky water. He doesn't.
I would think that running streams, creeks and rivers would not classify.
But I guess it is something to ask about and what the symptoms are.
I am glad she is acting herself, and zooming around. I would be nervous about leaving her too, but you are doing the best thing you can by removing the collar, and crating her.
I hope an answer comes up soon as well as a cure.

Sharon

Thanks for the info.

I get venison parts for the dogs from hunter friends. Clearly, freezing and keeping frozen for a period of time is a good idea.
