Re: It happened again :(

I TRIED doing an internet search...there must be something out there! I'm still wondering lyme (someone else mentioned that)...has she been tested for that? Found one posting mentioning Addison's. Also, I found postings from several people describing what sounded extremely similar to what your dog is going through...they mentioned that their vets suspected some kind of seizure activity...unfortunately none of the postings listed follow-ups saying what the final diagnosis was. One woman described (to a tee) what your dog was doing with her one golden...then said her second dog had started to have the same kind of episodes (these were not related dogs) which REALLY made it sound environmental...although her vet also thought seizure related behavior. I'm going to keep looking...hopefully I'll find something.
I believe you mentioned she hasn't gotten any vaccinations lately..has her food been changed?????Anything different in her environment???
Hope your girl starts doing better.

Re: It happened again :(

I am soooo sorry for you and Nisha. Those episodes sound very scary. You are both in my prayers. I know that people can have seizures where they act really bizarre and it makes me wonder if this could happen with animals too. I can't remember the exact name of the seizure, but its not grand mal or petit mal. I just hope they find out what's wrong with her soon. Best wishes to you.

Yes..I agree! When there is a loss of bowel and bladder control...it does sound very much like a seizure.
Hope there is some news for you soon.

How common is this? I've never experienced a dog having a seizure?

Re: It happened again :(

Thank you all; I just got back from the vet...Nisha stayed for tests. They are running a full blood panel and a urinalisis. They want to make sure her body is processing correctly (removing toxins). If nothing comes up, they will do a Lyme test next.

I too thought seizure; I have experienced many dog seizures (grooming), and Nisha's "episodes" are nothing like this. BUT from my research, there are types that allow the dog to keep consciousness (which are linked by the way to environmental causes). So, that is another option.

The last time we changed her food it was when she had Giardia...she is eating Wellness "Simple Solutions".

If this vet cant find anything she will refer us to a specialist. She did a full eye exam an said all her reflexes were normal.

I will look up Addisons disease and see what I find. Thanks for everyones suggestions.

**If it was environmental, how would I find out what it is? The doctor said there is no "test" for specific chemicals ect. Also, how to they test for seizures?

Re: It happened again :(

I found this website:Canine Epilepsy

Complex Partial Seizures (aka Psychomotor or Behavioral) Seizures: are associated with bizarre or complex behaviors that are repeated during each seizure. People with complex partial seizures experience distortions of thought, perception or emotion (usually fear), sometimes with unusual visual, olfactory, auditory and gustatory sensations. If dogs experience the same things, it may explain the lip-smacking, chewing, fly biting, aggression, vocalization, hysterical running, cowering or hiding in otherwise normal animals. Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal distress, salivation, blindness, unusual thirst(Nisha is drinking a little more than usual..nothing major) or appetite, and flank biting are other signs. There is an obvious lack of awareness though usually not lack of consciousness. Abnormal behaviors may last minutes or hours and can be followed by a generalized seizure. Complex partial seizures are usually associated with secondary epilepsy.

Secondary epilepsy refers to seizures for which a cause can be determined, and there are many. In dogs less than one year of age, the most commonly-found causes of seizures can be broken down into the following classes: degenerative (storage diseases); developmental (hydrocephalus); toxic (lead, arsenic, organophosphates, chlorinated hydrocarbons, strychnine, tetanus); infectious (distemper, encephalitis, and others); metabolic (such as transient hypoglycemia, enzyme deficiency, liver or kidney failure); nutritional (thiamine, parasitism); and traumatic (acute injury). In dogs 1-3 years of age, a genetic factor is most highly suspected. In dogs 4 years of age and older, seizures are commonly found in the metabolic (hypoglycemia, cardiovascular arrhythmia, hypocalcemia, cirrhosis) and neoplastic (brain tumor) classes. (Oliver, Seizure). Dr. Jean Dodds has mentioned that seizures are also associated with hypothyroidism, which is a familial (inherited) autoimmune disease of purebred dogs.

Re: It happened again :(

That info on the secondary epilepsy and complex partial seizures is enlightening. Maybe the blood work will help figure out what the cause might be... what happens to her would seem to fit within the definition.

You'll all be in our thoughts. Keep us posted.
