Re: It happened again :(

I watched that heartbreaking video! Poor baby! I am praying that your vet can pin this down & get her some help!! I have to say, though, that I want you to be so very careful with her! I don't want her to bite you when she's like that...poor baby doesn't know what she's doing. I know its tempting to try to cuddle her, but I was so worried that she'd get you when you were trying to pet her! Please put her in the kennel, with the gate closed, so she doesn't hurt herself or you or your family when she doesn't mean to! I don't want to hear that someone "well meaning" wants her put down because she hurt someone. Nisha doesn't realize what's happening to her. My heart is breaking for you both!! My guy Nero used to absolutely freak out at hot air balloons (breaking anything in his way of escape!) and was similar to the beginning of your video, but he never did what she's doing! There is something terrible happening to her, not just fear!!! My whole family is praying for you all!!! {hugs}

No news yet ...hopefully by today! Nisha is doing good (besides her behavior ). It is AMAZING how much exercise and getting out of the house affects their behavior ; I can't wait to wear her out again...then maybe I can get some sleep .

No more seizures since the video, so that is a good thing ! I am just hoping the tests come back okay and she doesn't need surgery.

Re: It happened again :(

Hi Nishas mom,
I had a puppy with a liver shunt, it is more common in Irish Wolfhounds.
My puppy didnt react exactly like Nisha was trying to hide but wasnt so frantic.
Yes the food makes them worse the more they eat the worse it becomes???
But I dont think from looking at your video clip that thats the problem.
I think SHYBIRD has got it in one. Something has spooked her and you need to find out what it is and more importantly what the association is with it.
There are lots of herbal/homeopathic remedies to help anxiety but obviously you need a diagnosis from the vet first.
There is a homeoepathic remedy that treats 'never been the same since'
I am thinking of you at this difficult time I hate waiting, everytime the phone rings you jump. Good Luck - What a little darling

Re: It happened again :(

Rottie40; did you do surgery on your dog with the liver shunt? How did she/he do? I am praying that this is not the problem with Nisha.

As far as the 'anxiety' thing...4 vets have now seen the video (as well as two behaviorists) , and all, with no doubts say it is a seizure . Complex focale seizure....affecting just some parts of the brain; not all as in a grand mall. Now the chore is to figure out what is causing the seizures.

Re: It happened again :(

I just watched the videio and something is spooking this poor dog! What the heck is going on! I saw the constant way she kept turning around as if she was scared of something around her? Some one in the professional field has to have a answer for this and has seen it before? Maybe a University Hospital or some specialist? I feel very bad for you all and hopefully soon something will give here. My prayers are with you. Debbie

Re: It happened again :(

Hi Nishasmom,
Some liver shunts cannot be operated on they are too severe and in my puppys case we had to have him PTS, he was only 5 months old and he was constantly sick and very poor. I am sure Nisha will be okay, think positive - She is older which is a good sign, I suggest you try and speak to a wolfhound breeder as they test the pups I think before they sell them for livershunt.
I boarded a GSD with liver shunt she was very poor and had constant cow pat poohs - they thought it was pancreatitis but it turned out to be liver shunt, she was a about 15 months old and was operated on succesfully.
I do hope you get this sorted and to be honest hopefully it is a liver shunt and they can operate and cure her because if it is a brain tumour I think that would be more tricky to sort ou. My thoughts are with you, when I meditate tonight I will send both you and Nisha some healing, she look likes my Piper who sadly has an inoperable tumour on her spinal cord. They are the sweetest dogs on Gods earth

Re: It happened again :(

Just wanted to give an update...no test results yet . Hopefully Monday! But, I really don't think a liver shunt is her problem; the vet told me to watch her after meals...if she had a shunt, we would see signs (or seizures) AFTER feedings. She is fine after meals.

Jesse and I really have a 'gut' feeling that her seizures were indeed caused by the new carpet! There is nothing else it could be that makes sense; Nisha has been kind of obsessively sniffing the carpet (okay, maybe not obsessively...but a lot). She has always been a sniffer, but she really likes that carpet! Also, she scratches at it, which is a little weird. We have never had any carpeting until last month.

She has been fine since the video was taken; maybe the formaldehyde is dissipating already??? It is another waiting game for us...will she freak out again or not?

If the bile test comes back negative (which I anticipate) the doctor said she wants to start her on Pheno. Do you think we should go ahead and put her on it? I would hate for her to be 'drugged up' if she doesn't really need it. But, I would hate for her to not be on it and have another seizure. The last one was on May 10th, so it has been over a week.

Everyones opinions are appreciated! Thanks.

Re: It happened again :(

Well, if it were me, knowing how strong a drug Phenobarb is, I would wait and see if she has another seizure before putting her on it.

We waited with Jager until she had 3 seizures in a 2 week span because before that it was once a month, which did not require meds.

If it is the carpeting, I would expect they should dissipate and not come back .... so I think it is worth waiting IMO. A week or two is not a big deal to hold off if she doesn't, in fact, need the meds at all.

Unless your vet finds out something concrete with the test results, I'd then recommend having the air quality in your home tested to see what polutants (including toxic chemicals) are present. I'd also recommend an air purifier. Here is a link recommended to a purifier recommended to me by my doctor which has significantly decreased my health problems. I used to have severe sinus infections many times throughout the year and I haven't had a single one in over a year.

jlaack: Did you do an at home test...I have seen quite a few kits on the internet. Or did you have a company come in and do the test?

Re: It happened again :(

I hired an inspector to come to my house to take an air sample. They sampled the air in two problem areas of the house and then a sample of air outside and sent it to a lab for analysis. We were only testing for mold, but they could have tested for other things if we had indicated we wanted them done. The cost was a few hundred but for us it was worth having a concrete answer that our house was making us sick. It also helped our doctors to treat us appropriately based on our exposure so the information was truly worth the money. I found the company that tested our air off the following site (I sent the link for TX). Maybe just call a couple and ask for their opinion over the phone. Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA)
