Re: It happened again :(

They MAY be the same thing...partial seizures also usually occur in the temporal lobes and both are listed as sometimes being called psychmotor seizures.

"Partielle" and "fokale" seizures are the same.
"Psykomotorisk" is the old term/name for "partielle/fokale komplekse" seizures!

Re: It happened again :(

When did she have the flagyl?????
Don't know if this is pertinant or not but just read this:
Putative Metronidazole Neurotoxicosis in a Cat -- Olson et al. 42 (5): 665 -- Veterinary Pathology

In dogs and cats, central vestibular and cerebellar dysfunctions resulting in ataxia, nystagmus, head tilt, tremors, and seizures are commonly reported in cases of metronidazole toxicosis
There are relatively few publications addressing the mechanism of metronidazole neurotoxicity. It is thought that the intermediate metabolites of metronidazole are able to bind to and disrupt cellular deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and induce cell death in anaerobic microorganisms.3,25 In mammalian cells, it has been proposed that metronidazole and/or its metabolites may bind to ribonucleic acid (RNA) instead of DNA.3,4,14 This RNA binding may inhibit RNA and/or protein synthesis, potentially leading to axonal degeneration.3,4,14,25 Using a rodent auditory model, investigators have also demonstrated that the severity of the lesions associated with metronidazole toxicity may be modulated by the level of functional brain activity (neurons).18 In humans, reversible changes have been observed in the brains of patients with metronidazole-induced encephalopathy by magnetic resonance imaging. Ahmed et al.1 suggested that the reversible changes associated with the acute toxic effects of metronidazole are most likely due to axonal swelling with increased water content rather than due to a demyelinating process. Another proposed mechanism involves vascular spasm that could produce mild reversible localized ischemia.1 The mechanism of action of metronidazole neurotoxicosis also may involve the modulation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter -aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor within the cerebellar and vestibular systems.6 In support of this hypothesis, it has recently been demonstrated that diazepam, a benzo-diazepine with major effects on GABA neurotransmitters in the brain, dramatically improved the recovery times for dogs with metronidazole toxicosis.6 Although most veterinary metronidazole toxicosis patients improved within 5–7 days after discontinuation of the drug, weeks and sometimes months may be required to completely resolve the neurologic effects.10 Thus, the time course to resolution of neurologic clinical signs is variable and likely multifactorial.

I'm also seeing chemicals in carpet (and carpet cleaners) linked to seizures as well...
just read this:
New carpets are extremely high in toxic chemicals, as are many pieces of upholstered furniture. Most types of paint are also highly toxic, as are wood preservatives.

Re: It happened again :(

She was diagnosed March 26th, and was on Metro. for 2 weeks (give or take a few days).

No symptoms until now though

Re: It happened again :(

My poor dog , I dropped her off at the vets office again. She always liked the vet...excited to go, ect. This time, she had this sad look about her like..."mom, please don't make me go again". Poor baby has been so much these past few weeks.

Anyways, I will tell everyone the bile test results as soon as I get them! I am kind of excited in a weird way. Today is a 'turning point'; we will either prepare for surgery (I hope this is not the answer), or start her on seizure meds....either way, we will be on the road to figuring out what is wrong !

Yes, I hope everything will work out for the best. At least now you have a direction to go in, instead of not having a clue what is wrong...I know I have a tendancy to kinda freak out when I don't know what's wrong, once I have a path and can start doing something, I'm good...

Poor Nisha. Max likes the vet too, but if he had to go through all that Nisha has, I'm sure he wouldn't like the vet anymore either. Hopefully surgery is not the answer. Best wishes to you and Nisha. Anxious to hear the results.

Re: It happened again :(

I was trying to find out if seizures caused by flagyl can develop 2 to 4 weeks after meds were discontinued...I did find some references to "lessions" in the brain of animals that reacted to flagyl...but no clear time references. What I kept repeatedly finding was that a conterindication of using flagyl was a prior reaction to it...so I'm not sure why your vet elected to use it again. The part of an article that I posted on your thread indicated that diazapam dramatically improved recovery times in dogs with metranidazole toxicosis...just something to keep in mind as an fyi.
If it is idiopathic seizuring, I'm hoping she feels better once on seizure meds. It does sound as if you're on the verge of figuring out what was happening to your girl...fingers crossed!!

Re: It happened again :(

Thank you everyone! Fostermom, I did speak with my vet about the Metronidizol; she told me that the seizures would have happened while on the drug, and they stop once the drug is out of their system. Also, she was only on it one time. (for 12 days or so).

Re: It happened again :(

Well, although Phenobarb is a narcotic and can be somewhat mood altering initially (my old girl fell a few times and was VERY sleepy the first 2 weeks), it has completely controlled Jager's seizures now for over 9 months.

It is a hard drug on the liver and what I have done is put Jager on Milk Thistle the entire time she has been on phenobarb as it helps maintain liver function.

I too, and 'hoping' all this is is some kind of seizure activity as Nisha can absolutely maintain a pretty much completely normal life on anti-seziure meds ....

Fingers and paws crossed for you!

Kristi

Wishing you both good luck today! It's nice to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. My prayers are with you both.

Re: It happened again :(

Rottcrazed, the vet did say Nisha would be sleepy until she gets used to the meds. I asked her for adverse effects....she did not mention the kidney issue . Thank you, if she is put on that drug, I will look into giving her milk thistle as well.

Unfortunately, I have to wait 2 days for the bile test results...I thought they could read them today, but I guess they have to be sent to a lab .

I remember when my ex-fosters family started him on phenobarb, they commented that he "wasn't himself" for the first week or two. This might help:

Re: It happened again :(

Nisha sounds like she's in very good care!! Ask your vet about possible weigh gain. My boy did gain weigh, seemed he was hungry all the time.
I did use human grade Milk Thistle(bought at a discount house. Also kept Rescue Remedy on hand for after seizures. Watson had reg blood draws to check liver functions.
If epilepsy is the culprit, yahoo groups has a very good support forum.
My prayers to you and Nisha.
