Jumped off a large hill, limping.

Hi there, our lucy is now just over 5 months, This last weekend we took her camping in the mountains, and while on a walk she leaped off a 12 foot cliff, and landed on flat ground. She immedietly started crying and was terrified, she would not let us near her for 5 mins. She was not walking on her one leg for a min or so. Although after a few hours she was playing with another pup at the springs. It has been 2 days and she is limping around. If this keeps up by tomorro i will take her to a vet. My question's are, Could she have broken something and still be walking on it? Will this do any long time harm to her joints? I dont know that much about the hip displacia and so on. Im also not sure wich leg it is, it could be bolth by the way she is limping. Will this heal itself?? She has been jumping up on the couch but we will not let her jump off anything for the meanwhile. She is maybe 50 pounds or lighter. Thanks alot.. !

I'd have crated her from that time on, and had her at the vet this morning. maybe you can call and have her seen today. yes, she could have fractured, torn or dislocated something. whether it can "heal itself" certainly depends on what it is!!

The only thing I can tell you for sure is she didn't break her leg, or she would not put it down at all! She could have dislocated something or sprained something. Get her x-rayed and checked ASAP. Good Luck, Debbie Ervin

I would not be thinking HD at this point - you KNOW your dog took a pretty big leap - it's clearly an acute type injury. She's still limping after two days - you know something's not right!

I would not wait to get her to a vet - I would crate rest her and try to get her in today. It is entirely possible that she has dislocated something, fractured a bone, torn a ligament, hurt her back, etc.

If she HAS - waiting isn't going to help things. I hope she feels better soon!

Did she intentionally leap or was this an accidental leap? My dog also took a flying leap (intentional) about the same distance down to level ground when she was about 9-10 weeks old. She got carried to the car, and kept quiet for the rest of the day....limped a teeny bit on one front leg the next day and then no limps at all following. I haven't seen any residual effects to date (she's 2-1/2 now and works pretty hard).....although that doesn't mean there will never be any. There's a big difference in the weight hitting the ground between the 13 pounds my puppy weighed at the time and your 50 pounder, though.

This is in the hind end, I'm assuming? Yes, she could have a hairline fracture and still use the leg, but I'd think that more likely on a front leg. Since she is still limping and you can't tell which leg it is, it could also be that the landing hurt her back.....I'd make an appointment immediately to have her seen and keep her activity limited to an xpen/crate with on leash potty breaks until she is seen by a vet.

As for long term joint damage, that was my concern also. I haven't seen any sign of it to date, but that doesn't mean there's no damage done.

Without knowing what your puppy injured, there's no way to estimate long term consequences.

Ok i just got back from the vet, who did a few tests by feel and she yelped pretty loud when he tested her front elbows, left is much worse however. Im kinda nervous about this. He didn't say exactly what it could be, but told me to let her rest for a few days and we will let him know if she is still limping. I guess x-rays would be the next step. He did say that she could have damaged a growth palate? but this was not likley. The leap was intentional, she did not just fall.

I'm glad you got her into the veterinarian. He didn't do xray films to take a look at what's going on?

Please heed his advice and crate rest her. Leash walk her as well until you get to the bottom of this.

No x-rays, I thought he should have too. $70 for what, 5 minutes? Oh well i just hope she is fine in a couple days. She is in her crate now. Thanks.
