vomiting PLE?

Here is Kodi's history http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/vet...nosed-ple.html

Well things are going sour. Last weekend Kodi started having severe gas and Wednesday server diarrhea returns. Last night vomiting came into play. He has vomited at least 10 as of 12 noon today. The last food Kodi had was last night and that came up around 11:45 pm, all day today he has been drinking lots of water but within 10 minutes he vomits it back up. I am going to have to take him to the vet today and see if they can figure anything out.

Well I got a an emergency appointment today and they are keeping Kodi over night to give him fluids through an iv. overnight. I have never seen him this lethargic and depressed over the last year, and it all came on over over the course of a couple days.

Re: vomiting PLE?

Hi Christy;

I'm just seeing this now. Hang in there. Remember - PLE outbursts come on rapidly. I'm glad you got him to the vet quickly and were able to get him on iv's. His stomach and intestinal tract need to rest; iv's will give his body the time to do that.

Keep us informed and good luck.

Re: vomiting PLE?

Christy,

I remember Kaeleigh having gas -- her stomach would sound like a drum sometimes, but her only vomiting seemed to be when her stomach was empty. All our flare-ups were of the diarrhea kind. I do know that the flare-up would make Kaeleigh look in pain or at least really not feeling well, and last from a few hours to a day or so until we got it back under control. The worst one was when she ate some wild animal poop at the cottage. We contacted our vet and monitered her closely, fed her a "safe" diet, and waited for her to come around. She did in a few agonizing hours (had it been much longer we would have found a local vet to take her to) and then was fine. Flare-ups are such scary things. It seems like you have done all the right things though. Any idea what caused the flare-up?

Please keep us informed as to Kodi's condition.

Re: vomiting PLE?

I don't know what could have caused the flare up. We live in the mountains and he has had cabin fever, we have had to have a close eye on him lately. There is a creek in our back yard with a culvert that goes under the road and if he knows your not watching we will sneak through it and play and more than likely scavenge for something to eat. I thought he had gotten over the eating feces thing, unless he got smart enough to do that behind our backs as well(he is very smart).

There have been flare ups in the past and we fast him for a minimum of 12 hours then go back to rice with little protein and he is usually good within a 2 days. Lots of the time he will not show interest in food while he is sick. I thought maybe that yesterday the vomit was due to lack of food and he just need something to settle the stomach acid but, he would not even try to eat. Plus all the vomit from the first night was his dinner with the rice and protein undigested.

We are eagerly awaiting a phone call to the vet, it is still a little early(5:40am). But I will keep his condition posted.

Re: vomiting PLE?

We got a call from the vet at 8:00am today and she said that Kodi was doing extremely well and that she felt comfortable letting him go home.

I picked him up at noon and he looked great. He was full of energy and jumped right in the cab of the truck; yesterday I had to pick him up. He will rest today and maybe start on some rice for dinner, when I can monitor him. The first thing he did when he got home was check out his food bowl, thats an obvious sign he is feeling better if his mood wasn't enough.

Re: vomiting PLE?

Hi Christy!!! I'm a little late coming, but am so glad to hear Kodi's upset has been booted out the door! He likely did a taste test on some forbidden delishocity when you weren't looking.....

When upsets occur, you are limited in what you can do. For Luna, I would back up a step or two with the diet, usually pulling out the "richer" ingredients (usually the MCT Fuel first, much of the meat second) and keeping it bland for the duration of the upset. A bit of a fast is fine, too, and they usually impose that on themselves....as long as they are still drinking. Then you just have to wait the thing out and hopefully they bounce back within a couple days. If it goes on more than two to three days, depending on how the dog is feeling, then it's time to see the vet - as you did. Did you adjust his diet at all when the upset first began? If not, doing that may help next time and save you the hospital bill. Did they treat him with anything other than an IV for hydration? It sure sounds like he came home feeling MUCH better!

So how has he been since last year? Is no news good news? Are his proteins still holding? I hope so!

Re: vomiting PLE?

Hello Moondog, they gave Kodi two 20meq of Lactated Ringers one each day and two Potasium Chloride 20meq. The vet said that they would give him his pred through the IV. but if they did they didn't charge us.

As for the changing of the diet, anytime he gets gas that has an odor we back off the proteins. He is usually gassy but most of the times they don't have an odor, it kinda strange his feces doesn't even have an odor when all is going well; it must be the healthy diet.

As for his protein levels they were tested a about a two months ago when they retested his thyroid levels. Every thing was in excellent condition. He had gained so much wieght we took away one of his feedings.

By the way, if we ever have a female we may have to name her Luna, if you don't mind.

Pred is cheap, so I imagine they did and didn't see the need to charge for it. I gave Luna potassium chloride tablets in the beginning when she was so sick - that may have kept us out of the doggie ER!

You are so smart and have really caught on to the way for successful management. I'm not surprised he's doing so well!

Needing to watch his weight (gain ) is a really GOOD sign.

Mind? I would be honored to have been some small part of naming a dog Luna! And I'm sure Luna will be happy to be an angel on your shoulder, too!
