| My new "adopted" 3 y/o girl is limping... We were outside playing fetch and she was running kinda hard for about 10 min. Well, now she has alittle limp. My hubby said that he noticed a slight limp yesterday and today (before the fetch session). She really hasn't been too active since we adopted her. She'll play for about 5-10 min. (running and playing ball) and then she lays down. I had made an appt. for our Vet to just do a regular check on her earlier today, but now, I'm also going to have him look more closely at her limping. The reason the Humane Society had that she was given up to begin with was the family was moving to where they can't have pets. But yet the form also said that she had lived with other dogs and cats and none of them where at the HS. Ruby had only been up for adoption for a day before we got her. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe she wasn't dropped off for other reasons? She's doing better now, but there's still a slight limp there. I'm just worried, she's so sweet!! She also isn't very active, like I said, she only plays for about 5-10 min. Maybe three times per day. Maybe it's b/c she is hurt? I guess I'll see tomorrow when I bring her to see the Dr. Thanks for any thoughts (or hugs/comfort). |

He wasn't too active at first either, but I think he was just nervous being somewhere new and with 3 other dogs and probably tired from being at a shelter. He still follows me from room to room but is much more comfortable and loves to sit in our laps. They just don't understand that they aren't lap dogs but that's okay. I hope it's nothing serious with your girl's leg, and let us know how the vet visit went. Leslie

| Re: My new "adopted" 3 y/o girl is limping... have the vet see her and get xrays.depending if limping from front or back: it can be a torn cruciate(rear leg), hips(rear leg),elbows(front leg), a sprain, a back injury. hope all turns out ok and is the lesser of all limps.

| Re: My new "adopted" 3 y/o girl is limping... Well, I took her in yesterday. The Vet said he's not seeing any hip or elbow dysplatia (so that's good). But, her shoulder is messed up. He called is Osteo-something, lol. Basically he said the cartlege (sp?) is deformed. He said to give her an aspirin an hour before playing ball with her and see if that helps the limping. He said we may need to not run her so hard for a few weeks, but ultimately if the asprin doesn't help, she'll need surgery. So, while it's not great news, it's not hugely horrible either. We'll start saving for the surgery ;). |

| Re: My new "adopted" 3 y/o girl is limping... glad you got an answer. i would try ascriptin instead of aspirin, and give it with food to keep from upset stomach...or ask about giving a NSAID, such as rimadyl, metacam, ect.

You need to know and understand exactly what the problem is with your dog. Osteo-something tells you very little. It could be a problem that can be managed with medication or it could be something very serious. That the vet has advised only that you 'not run her so hard' while she has a limp is also quite strange. I'm surprised he didn't advise total rest. If I were you I would contact the vet and ask for a clear explanation of the problem so you gain some understanding. |
