Any Idea what this is?

Fizbin can't seem to catch a break. He is at the vets now and has been for most of the day. He is on IV fluids. Starting yesterday he has been vomiting and diarrhea with blood from both ends. He has not been able to keep down water. X-rays did not show blockage, but an inflamed gut.
My vet gave him anti-nausa shot and put him on the IV fluids. His body temperature is low too. His blood volume is up, but that could be just from being dehydrated. He hasn't been out anywhere. He isn't the type to eat strange things. My other two dogs are not exhibiting these syptoms.

I wish I had something concrete to offer, but what you describe is like nothing any of my dogs have experienced.

Wishing Fizbin a speedy recovery--you must be so worried.

Re: Any Idea what this is?

Inflamed gut may indicate pancreatitis (?). Maybe have the vet check Fizbin's blood for signs of this.

Hope he's feeling better soon.

Has your vet ruled out addison's disease.

Re: Any Idea what this is?

Another possibility could be hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. My girl was allergic to grass and had ingested some fermented grass left by the landscaper who was instructed to pick up all grass clippings, not just mulch them into the lawn. She presented with severe bloody diarrhea and was checked for Parvo at the emergency vet. Results were negative. However, with IV fluids and antibiotics already in her, I chose to take her home with the understanding that if it got worse, I'd return to the emergency vet. She recovered completely and was none the worse for wear.

Good luck and I hope that Fizbin is soon well enough to go home.

Re: Any Idea what this is?

Fizbin is home now. He got 1.5 liters of fluid in 8 hours. He has not vomited in 8 hours, nor a bowel movement of any kind. He is on flagyl, clavamox and anti-nausea. Blood work will be back in the morning. She is checking for pancreatitis, but doesn't think that is it. No mention of Addision's.
My husband had a lot of the vomit/diarrhea cleaned up by the time I got downstairs this morning. I guess he didn't want to scare me with the amount of blood he saw. I saw some, but apparently it was "everywhere". He told me that after seeing all of the foul smelling stuff, he expected to see Fizbin dead or at least close to it. But he was standing up and alert looking.
I gave him 3/4 cup of instant baby rice cereal made with water and some of the juice from Instinct duck and a spoonfull of the duck. He wouldn't touch it until I added more duck juice. Even then he left half.
I am very glad that he is home.

Re: Any Idea what this is?

Lottie had the bloody vomiting last year we rushed her to the vet after lots of x-rays and tests vet said it was gastritis, he showed us the x-rays and we could see how thick the lining of her stomach was compared to what it should have been, her temp was through the roof also. after 6 injections antibiotics and various other pills including tagamet, and a huge vets bill (it was a sunday)we bought her home and within a wek she was her old self. but she didn't each much for the first 3-4 days, just minced chicken. I hope Fizbin (love the name) feels well again soon.

Re: Any Idea what this is?

Lola has had so much of what you mention about Fizbin. It seemed like every few weeks she would be vomiting blood. It looked like tiny droplets. At first I thought she had gotten into a can of coffee, but it was blood. Sometimes just bright red droplets sometimes darker. This was almost always accompanied by bloody diarrhea and little appetite. The vet tested and treated for everything. Finally he did xrays and a different blood test. Acute bacterial over growth in her belly was the cause. He had and still has no idea why or how she got this condition. It is different than the ordinary gastritis. Lola was put on amoxicillin for the bacteria and tagamet acid reducer for the vomiting. So far so good for over a year. She needs both meds every day. The vet took her off all dog food and I cook for her. She eats 3xa day plus a snack before bed. If your boy requires a special diet, I will be happy to give you the one we have used for her.
I hope he feels better!!!

That is one thing that my vet mentioned. He is much better this morning. He is wanting real food. He really doesn't care for the rice cereal, even though I put some canned salmon in it. Duncan isn't finishing his food and Fizbin is trying to get to it before I do.
So far no vomiting and just loose stools. I am not seeing blood either. His attitude is much improved, but not completely back to normal. I still haven't heard from my vet on the lab results yet.

Re: Any Idea what this is?

My vet finally called with the results. The results were what you would expect with a dehydrated dog- nothing more and nothing less. Nothing to explain why he was vomiting and pooping blood. He is much better- tired but happy. He hasn't vomited since being at the vet. I havent't seen him have a bowel movement, but what might be his in the yard is soft, but no blood.
I guess he just wanted some expensive vet time again. My vet asked me to let her know which dog she will be seeing next. I told her to not curse me!

Re: Any Idea what this is?

Hi Francis,

One of my kids (not living with me) got the same thing a few weeks ago - vomiting and pooping blood. After a panic vet visit and lots of tests, they found nothing other than bacterial overgrowth. Did not even put him on antibiotics, just a dose or two of flagyl the first day...since the fecal was negative. She kept him off food and within a day or two he was his old self. The soft poop went for a couple days, but nothing scary like the first day. Wonder if there is something going around, or if it's something icky they are eating in the spring? Only comment from the vet was that his poop was "gritty" like there was dirt in it...

Glad Fizbin is feeling better!

Re: Any Idea what this is?

glad to hear he is home and doing fine.
it could have been a bacterial overgrowth that triggered an HGE.
it happens.
most common seen in small breeds of dogs, but it happens.

no, tell your vet we don't need another sick one!

Re: Any Idea what this is?

Wouldn't a bacterial over growth have an immune response like high white blood cell counts and fever? He had below normal temperature and normal WBC count. The only things that were "off" on his blood panel was the things that would be off for a dehydrated dog.
