Doggie boots??

My Piper has a tumour on her spine this is making her 'knuckle over' on her front feet and I was wondering if anyone has had any success with any sort of protection for the top of her feet.
The specialist said try Mikki Boots but because she is struggling to control her feet they are quite cumbersome. Has anyone got any homemade or indeed patented 'straps' or lightweight 'boots' that they have used??
ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks in anticipation

Re: Doggie boots??

You may have success if you search for boots used for horses.

There are splint boots for foals or mini’s that are rottie size …jumping boots, polo wraps, medical boots, you name it.

Try these places :

http://www.bigdweb.com/

http://www.jeffersequine.com/ssc/

And do a search under boots or wraps. I am sure you will find something that will help.

I am sorry to hear Piper is not feeling well. I will keep you in my thoughts !

Re: Doggie boots??

Many thanks for that Marley.
I will go on the sites and see if I can source anything.
The vet also told me to just put vet wrap round her feet but it doesnt stay on 5 minutes and if its wet its a nightmare.
We are lucky she has very little pavement walking as we live in the country so she has mainly grass to walk on thank goodness, when she does walk on the paths the tops of her little feet bleed - its so sad
Kind Regards

Re: Doggie boots??

If that's what is happening, then I would just try the polo wraps. they come in packs of 4, are usually nice and thick, and are washable. They are horse tough so they should hold up well. A set of 4 can be found from $5.00 to $50.00 depending on what you are looking for. Try an Ebay search, there are 100's found under polo wraps.

Good luck to you !

Re: Doggie boots??

Thanks Marley,
went on the other sites and didnt see anything that quite fit the bill
Will try Ebay, never heard of polo wraps? is it similar to vetwrap?
Might try a local tack shop tomorrow??
Piper is laid here at my feet in the sunroom looking just gorgeous, it is hard to imagine she is so desperately ill and I will not have her much longer. I cannot think about that right now I have to do everything to help her.
Once again thankyou for your kindness

Re: Doggie boots??

Polo wraps are used to protect the horses legs when jumping, trail riding and shipping to protect the lower legs from cuts, scrapes or damage from the trails. Good Luck to You !

Re: Doggie boots??

Thanks for that Marley55,
The polo wrap didnt work, but I thought it would looking at it??
Have got a dog mukka boot from the vet with 2 lots of velcro fastenings & although it is too small i have ordered 2 in the next size up, I am hopeful they will do the trick.
Although Piper was not too keen she will get used to them I am sure and i cannot stand to see the top of her feet getting scuffed and bleeding.
My vet said stop taking her for a walk but she loves to go out and what sort of life would that be for her?? we also have other dogs that go out and she would feel left out and be miserable - bless her
Will keep you posted as to how the boots are when they arrive Monday
Bye for now

Re: Doggie boots??

Thanks for that Jaime,
Looked on that site and the 'walkabout boots' are the ones the vet has actually ordered for me, they have got a really good review that makes me feel a little more confident about about them.
I do have a reservation about the way she will take to them, because of the very nature of her symptoms, she doesnt have a lot of control over her feet and I wonder whether they will make her trip over more!!!!
Crumbs I wish i wasnt a born worrier .
I will get them and see how we go, hopefully she will adapt to them?? If not they will have to go on e-bay!! lol hey ho!
Many thanks once again Jaime for taking the time to post it is very kind of you
Kind Regards

Re: Doggie boots??

I hope they work out for you and your girl. If all else fails, you could try securing socks to her feet. Thicker ones, like athletic socks. When my old Husky had a cyst between her toes and would constantly lick it we taped a sock onto her foot. Worked well and didn't seem to affect her walking.

Re: Doggie boots??

If by chance the boots you have don't work out, there is a site that is located in NH called Handicapped Pets - For Elderly, Disabled, Special Needs, and Injured Pets - Products, Services, and Support and they have almost anything you could possibly need. Good luck.

Whenever it was wet out we would wrap Misha's socked foot in a plastic bag to keep it from getting soaked.

Jaime

Hope the boots work out for you!!!

Re: Doggie boots??

Good luck trying out the boots!! All I can think of is the halloween costume I made for my Beau, it included cuffs... He pranced around like a horse for a minute or two and then ate them off!! Hopefully, your experience goes better!! I hope your Piper is doing good!!! You and her are in my thoughts...
