Thumbs up Help! Injury to front leg!

Hello Everyone-
I had a scare last night and I think my Rottie may have injured her front leg...
What happened was that I was vacuuming and my pup doesn't like the vacuum. So when it was time for me to vacuum the side of the bedroom she was on I inched towards her and told her to "watch out & move" and she sped past me and hit the side of our bed with her front leg! She sat and howled and whined for a good 2 minutes and then was trying to walk on it. She can walk on it and put pressure on it but is very vocal about it and whines loudly. This happened last night at about 10pm. She went up and down the stairs twice and whined when she did that. I had a friend come over that has dogs and runs a rescue so her knowledge is good and she felt her leg and squeezed her paw, shoulders and chest with no whining....hmm. She suggested that she maybe she pulled a muscle and that we should watch her and see if it progressed...she didn't want me spending a huge amount of money at the emergency vet. Today she is walking a little bit, just to go outside, but won't eat and has laid down all morning in the same spot! I don't know what to do! My vet is open in the morning at 8am but I don't want to hurt her more by not addressing it now!!! Any suggestions????

Crate rest her and only let her out to go to the bathroom and eat.

Re: Help! Injury to front leg!

get to the vet, that's an extreme reaction so certainly could be quite serious

I would also completely restrict her to crate rest and outside to potty only. I would also block the stairs so she isn't walking up or down them in the interim and get her to the vet first thing tomorrow. It could be a pulled muscle or it could be a fracture or ???. Since you don't know it is best to avoid strain on the leg by limiting movement especially something as tricky as walking up and down stairs.

In that scenario, it sounds to me like the most likely part of her leg she would hit is her elbow...I'd be worried about a fracture with the obvious pain she's in. Keep her confined and only on leash when not confined until you can get her to a vet, and I'd make sure you're there when they open their doors tomorrow morning at the very latest.

Hey Everyone!

Well, today she is doing better. She is limping around a little still but *no* whining!
I was unable to go to the vet because they were not open till after 2pm and I work at 2pm. But since she wasn't whining and was wanting to outside and play today I am going to watch her for 1 more day. I have been keeping her away from the stairs and she seems like she getting better! I think if it was broken she wouldn't be walking on it...right? Tahnks for all the replies! I will keep you all posted!

Re: Help! Injury to front leg!

I would still get this dog to the vet- can you go tomorrow? Her reaction was quite extreme - and Rotts are known to be very stoic. At this point, she may just be tolerating the pain. A normal bump does NOT result in a Rott that cries for an extended period of time.

I would still confine her to crate rest only, as well. If she bounces around, she could make it worse.

Re: Help! Injury to front leg!

Well, today we went to the vet. Izzy was scheduled to get spade and the vet checked her leg. He said that he didn't notice anything out of the ordinary and she probably just bruised it. Her surgery for the spade went well and she only has a small inch maybe inch and a half incision and the stitches are and inside. Izzy though is very slow moving and threw up once already. She isn't sleeping, but she is laying around. Anyone have any get well suggestions?
