Warmer temps, winded fast

2 hour walks were no problem in the winter. Now it's 25 celsius and he (about a year old, no weight issues, perfect body shape) gets winded after 30 minutes (in the sense that he pants like crazy and slows down to the the point where he's obviously done.

Normal?

Re: Warmer temps, winded fast

25 celsius isn't that warm, however when the temps warm up both my dog and I go through a period of acclimating to the higher temps. Humidity will play into it, also....the higher the humidity, the harder the body has to work to regulate internal temps.

Since dogs only "sweat" through their pads, they have to resort to panting to help regulate their body temp, so it's more likely this is what you are seeing, rather than him being "winded". Heatstroke is a big concern with dogs. When your dog "quits", he's telling you what his limits are. If this point is out of character for him without an obvious environmental cause (temp and humidity), I'd say a vet check is in order.

Re: Warmer temps, winded fast

I'd also try to do his more strenuous activities in the early morning or late evening when it's not as hot or humid out. We're usually out for a walk by 6:45am and don't go back out until dusk. Max also pants like crazy when he's hot so I try to keep him indoors for the high heat of midday.

Re: Warmer temps, winded fast

Yeah, huge difference. I did the walk tonight at 8 pm and it doubled the time. Now if I can only get my butt up early enough in the morning....
