Thumbs up Major Hair Loss and bald spots

I have an 8 year old Rottweiler who is losing his hair something terrible. You can actually see his skin. He looks sick from all the hair loss, but 2 vets can't figure out what is wrong with him. The hair is driving me crazy. I can't let him roam the entire house anymore since my daughter has a hard time with he allergies with the hair. I don't know what to do. His eyes have even been caked looking. I need help or some advise on what to do. If a vet can't figure out what is wrong with him who do I turn to.

Re: Major Hair Loss and bald spots

What tests have the vets done to try and determine a cause?

Please tell us what these two vets did to try and figure out what is wrong with your dog. Find a vet who is willing to investigate the problem and arrive at a diagnosis then treat your dog for what sounds like an illness that's causing him extreme discomfort.

If your dog looks sick then he certainly is sick. Did the either of the vets prescribe any medication for your dog? If so, what did they prescribed?

Re: Major Hair Loss and bald spots

at minimum i hope they did thyroid/endocrine system tests, skin scrapes, blood work.
if all in the blood, thyroid and endocrine appear normal, you might want to be referred to a dermatologist to see if they can find out what is causing this alopecia. with eyes being caked too i would guess maybe a form of allergy or something not working right.

Re: Major Hair Loss and bald spots

Full blood work should give them some ideas. Be sure when they check thyroid that they do a full panel. Test should be repeated if they didn't do that the first time.
