Re: Jaxx has bone cancer

I feel your pain as I have been there before. I think you are going down the right path, with bone cancer there is no guarantee that if you amputate it wont come back. I read many things on the net when Magnum was diagnosed with bone cancer back in 2002 and after reading about amputation (and crying my heart out reading about how they cry and shake and lick their missing limb) there was no way i could ever do that to him. I did do a bone biopsy, which i would not recommend you do as it weakens the bone. He broke his leg a week after the results came in. Spoil Jaxx as much as you can and spend as much time with him as you possibly can loving him. There are a few people here who have put their dogs on a pain management plan (Anne is one that i can think of from the top of my head) and it seems to be helping their dogs with the pain. Have you spoken to an oncologist (sp?) about this yet?

I will say a prayer for both you and Jaxx, it is devistating news and my heart is breaking for you.

~*tight hugs*~

Re: Jaxx has bone cancer

MK and Laurie,
I am glad we are not the only ones out there doing this-my husband and I brought the mattress downstairs from our spare bedroom, and we have been sleeping in the family room with Riley-we didn't want her to climb the stairs, and we had been sleeping on the sofas while she was on the floor, but we wanted to be next to her. the things we do for our babies:):) they are worth it!!

Re: Jaxx has bone cancer

You are doing everything to make her comfortable as you should! I new with Ceasar my time was limited due to tumor at his brainstem and we spent many happy times all his life together but even more memories and I was always snapping pictures of him doing different things. Just love her and as our vet told me make her life as stressless as possible until it is time. Normal for her. You are in my prayers. Debbie Ervin

Re: Jaxx has bone cancer

we opened my inlaws shore house this weekend (in long beach island, nj) and took riley with us (hopefully not for the last time) and we were blessed with beautiful weather yesterday-it was almost 70, which was wonderful since they were calling for rain. we sat outside on the deck all afternoon, and riley was basking in the sunshine, looking at the ducks in the water, and we were there with the video camera and camera capturing it all. if this was her last weekend there we couldn't have asked for a better one-she got to do exactly what she loves to do down there - sit outside in the sunshine and enjoy life. i can only keep my fingers crossed for one more time down there with her, so she can take one last boat trip across the bay, with the breeze in her face. but we had a great weekend, and i am happy we were able to do this for her.

Re: Jaxx has bone cancer

Jaxx is still doing fine, the meds seem to be working for now. But he is slowing down to be sure. Now my schnauzer Simon goes out first to clear the yard of rabbits, raccoons and other assorted vermin.

He has not attempted to get on the bed again, but I have blown up the air mattress and we sleep on the air mattress on the floor now…my back is killing me, but he is as happy as a clam in sand because he can sleep with me.

It was a beautiful weekend in Ohio, lots of sun, so he spent 2-3 hours outside baking in the sun on Saturday. I swear he was smiling when I checked on him, then off to Stricklands we went for a dish of vanilla ice cream. He may not feel good, but I am going to do all that I can to let him know that I understand and will help him smile as long as I can.

Quality time and pictures! Normal and stressless as possible! Thats what I was told to do for my boy Ceasar and his time left was normal and we enjoyed every bit of it. He would sit outside and bask in the sun and watch everyone and everything go by us. He would lay on the deck with us and he loved it as always. He knew when I would say, "well, what do you think", that meant lets go in and he would get up. They are all the best.

Re: Jaxx has bone cancer

I found out Lexi has bone cancer 3 weeks ago. We are going through this too. I have been sleeping on the sofa so she doesn't have to go upstairs. I tried one night to block the stairs so she would stay down but all she did was pace and cry. So down I came with the alarm clock and have been there since. I'm starting to forget what my bedroom looks like. I will keep all of you in my prayers. Eileen

Re: Jaxx has bone cancer

Jaxx is still doing pretty good. We have his pill taking down to a system now.

He gets his pain meds and Rymidal inserted into hunks of sausage and down the hatch they go.

I had been using the hide in a piece of cheese method but he quickly caught on to that and refused to eat anymore cheese. He loves cheese more then anything and I just hates to ruin his enjoyment so on to the next method we went.

Every day we sit down and talk in the morning and I tell him how much I love him and ask him how he is doing and to please be good while I’m at work and I’ll be home soon.

At night we do the same with me asking how his day was and how many burglars did he scare away while I was at work and what would he like for breakfast in the morning. My boyfriend thinks I am insane but oh well.

Right now Jaxx gets pretty much what he wants and that will be that.

Re: Jaxx has bone cancer

you are not insane, i do the same thing with riley. i just pray that nothing happens to her while i am not there. my husband can work from home, thank God, so she's not by herself. he just called me and said that she was crying, i think the tramadol is going to need to be upped from the one a day we were giving her.

Re: Jaxx has bone cancer

Hi Gina,

One a day?? That's not bad.....you're lucky, she's still on the minimum dosage. My Vet started Xena on 2-pills, twice a day. It seemed to be the right amount for her, as she was able to use her leg again......somewhat at least. Before the medicine, she held it up 100% of the time!! But every dog has their own threshold for pain. She made the dosage based on the size of Xena's tumor, which was like a plum at the time. By the end, (Yesterday, as you know) it was almost a tennis ball..............and we were up to 3-pills, 4-times a day.

Hope Riley is well,
Best to you & your Husband
MK
