Yogi is vomitting and has had diarrhea w/ blood

My 8 year old Yogi has had diarrhea all day! It started at 5:30 this morning when my husband woke up to diarrhea in our hallway all the way to the kitchen door. He thought it was a fluke (for some reason) and left him roaming the house. I then woke up with my son at 6:30 to Yogi vomiting in the hallway and guest bathroom. The vomit had the weirdest looking stuff... Sorry to be so gross in advance!! It had what LOOKED like french fries with dog food... The vomit in the bathroom had larger pieces of white stuff that looked like an onion. We have not had anything with onions or french fries just using them as examples. I then put him in our basement so he wouldn't be around my son... I periodically went down there and checked on him and took him out. When my husband came home at 5 I thought everything was okay! Then don't ya know he had diarrhea in my office. No warning or anything. It seems like he just sits down and boom everywhere!! So we took him out side where he tried to use the bathroom several times. No success, but when he came back to the house, there was blood running down... We cleaned him up and left him outside this time... When I went out to check on him just now, there was blood again, I assume he tried to go again... SO with all that said, I need to know if you guys think it is just an upset stomach or something worse! Sorry so long!

Yogi is sure to be dehydrated with the vomiting and diarrhea, and blood in his stool. Don't wait, get him to a vet, if they are closed find an animal hospital and take him right away. Might be worthwhile to take a sample of the most recent loose stool with you. Call the animal hospital maybe they even will want a sample of his vomit.

It could be so many thing! I would suggest you give him no food and just water...and if he stops vomiting after no food food for 24 hours ...cook up some white rice and chicken. Three parts rice to one part chicken...give him a meal of that and if things go well, feed him a second meal of that.

If at any time he is lethargic or begins vomiting or has bloody diarrhea again...I would take him in to see the vet. Sometimes when they have a bad gastro upset they do get bloody diarrhea. You need to make sure that he gets some water.

Is there a chance that he has swallowed anything? or chewed on something that he should not have? Bones, toys, socks, sticks, etc.???

It almost sounds like pieces of rawhide. Does Yogi get these? They don't digest well and it could be what is giving him the upset. I too would recommend the rice and chicken, but get your boy to the vet just to make sure.

if he has been vomiting all day, i would not feed him tonight. only offer to lick ice cubes if thirsty. NPO overnight.
if he continues tomorrow, is lethargic, or he has another bloody stool, take him to the vet asap.
it can be many things. foreign object obstruction, HGE, ulcer, ect.
the longer you wait, things can get complicated for him.he will need at minimum a fecal exam, bloodwork and possibly x rays.

if he is back to normal, active and ok, then offer a small amount of boiled chicken and rice. if he holds it and does well, slowly feed a little more at a time and in the next day or two switch slowly to regular diet.

hope he is better, keep us posted.

I bet that is it!! He has not had a rawhide in a long long time and last night I found one he had buried in my sons stuffed animals and gave it to him! He kept me up last night chewing on it!! We have an appointment with the vet first thing in the morning just to be sure. He has been the same ole' Yogi other than the whole "messy situation" Thanks so much for all the help everyone, you really made me feel better!

My mom warned me (her vets told her) not to give these to our dogs because they have found that they harborand grow lots of bacteria.....I have given them to Sassy but if she doesnt chew it all up the day I give it to her I throw it away....and since Rotties are sensitive to soooo many things, maybe she has a little bacteria bug from that....had she already chewed on it some?

Re: Yogi is vomitting and has had diarrhea w/ blood

I'm glad you're getting him to the vet in the morning....from what you've described (unable to poop, blood running down, and especially in light of the rawhide he ate), I'd be very concerned that the rawhide has caused an obstruction in his intestinal tract. If that's the cause and it's left untreated too long, sections of intestine can die.

Re: Yogi is vomitting and has had diarrhea w/ blood

Sheena got diarrhea and it then went to explosive bloody diarrhea one evening.
Took her to the vet. Sheena had gotten an obstruction from a rope toy.
Vet did tests and decided to wait a little while to see if Sheena could pass the obstruction.
Thankfully she was able to pass the obstruction on her own. It was a very frightening time!
No more rope toys or anything else that could even remotely cause any obstructions!

I hope by now your Yogi is much better.
