Wink Question about neutering?

First of all I have to say that I am so glad I found this site !
My husband and I have 3 Rotts. We have an almost 9 month old male that we want to have neutered, but are unsure when to do it. We lost a male last year at the age of 7 to osteosarcoma. It was in his shoulder. We adopted him at age 6 and even though we had alot of behavioral issues, we worked through them and loved him very much! That was heartbreaking!! Needless to say, I have done alot of research about neutering them before they are sexually mature. Some say 6 months, some say 1 year, and others 14 months??? (HELP) We want to do what's best for our dogs. We have also switched to an almost all raw diet. I have read that their diet can also be a huge factor in preventing cancer. Not to mention all the other benefits of raw.
Our vet is no help, they would have done it before 6 months and think the idea of raw is crazy......... Thinking of changing.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Re: Question about neutering?

I spayed my dog at 6 months...this was before I found this site. If I would have known, I would have waited until 18 months. Just be sure you keep him away from females in heat .

Re: Question about neutering?

I had both dobes done, one 12 months the other 18 months.that was a few years ago. we had a vet that wanted to spay at 5 months we thought that was too young so got a second opinion, new vet said to wait till after first season, sometimes you dont know what to believe!

Re: Question about neutering?

I would wait to neuter a male until at least 12 months of age. I personally want the hormones to do their job and have the majority of the growing done before neutering. Also, I prefer to have a dog look like a dog and not look bitchy which tends to happen.

For females, it's better to wait until after the first heat to spay.
