Re: ?? here hope someone can help

I tend to think a possible cruciate tear if he's putting it down and picking it back up again --- "toe tapping" is often a sign of a partial or complete ACL tear. In any case - I agree that a trip to the vet is the only way to know for sure.

It sounds like a cruciate tear to me, too.

Your sister and brother-in-law may be very good breeders and very knowledgeable about their breed of choice, the ShihTzu....BUT....it does not necessarily follow that they would be knowledgeable about common problems in a different breed, and a large breed at that. Cruciate tears are not a problem for ShihTzu's - but they are very common in Rottweilers of all ages, as is osteosarcoma (bone cancer) when they reach their older years.

In order not to make this worse before you can get him to the vet, don't continue to manipulate the leg trying to find the soreness; keep him confined in a small area (a crate or xpen), and; keep him leashed when going out to potty. If he runs, jumps, or twists on that leg it will likely make the problem that much worse, so wisdom is caution. I hope he'll be okay.

Arrow Got Sam To The Vet And No Hip Problems So Far!!

For the ones who care,i'm the guy that's got the 9 year old rotti and was wanting some ideas as to why he was limping.well i got him to the vet and they said he has got a sprained knee.i'm not happy but i 'm so glad he didn't have (HD) or bone cancer. he gave me CIPROFLOXACIN for infection and RIMADYL for pain. so i'm glad my boy is hopefully on his way to recovery.and i'm very happy he has no hip problems.

If his toenail has been split, that can be quite painful. As well, if the quick is exposed, there is the possibility that infection has set in. Nail infections can lead to bone infections which are not good. Please get your boy to the vet.

If this has nothing to do with his toe, it may be his knee or his hip. Please get your boy to the vet.

Could be that he simply has a sprain or muscle injury. You cannot possibly know the root of the problem if it's internal, and if the limp has persisted you need to please get your boy to the vet.

Re: ?? here hope someone can help

Hi Guy - Just wanted to say I totally understand the $ thing - my hubby has been out of work since August and i am in school full time. Our girl has blown both her knees - first the right and then blew the left and meniscus while waiting for surgery one her right. So now we are looking at $3500 that we don't have. So trust me, I understand where you are coming from.
We have 4 kids, 2 dogs rottens (one rotti shep who is coming up 10 and our girl who will be 4), 3 cats, guinea pig and assorted fish. We take our pets very seriously however - at some point, sometimes, you have to make a choice. I understand where you are coming from.
Cheers,
Tee

When we decide to own animals we take on the responsibity of caring for their health. Vet fees are expensive.

Yes, you have to make a choice but the time to make that choice is before you commit to taking on an animal you can't afford to care for.

The animals pay a high price for an owners poor choice when they suffer an injury or failing health and there is no money for appropriate vet treatment.

Re: ?? here hope someone can help

Am pleased to hear that you took your dog to the vet and found out what was causing his pain. Hopefully he will be back to normal in no time.

If you or your family were sick and you couldn't afford treatment, you'd do everything you could to get it for them. To most of us here we do the same for our animals, they are our family and seeing them in pain and not taking them to the vet immediately is just not an option.

Perhaps your vet will let you pay off your account in installments? Its always worth the question. People can be accommodating if you just ask.

Re: ?? here hope someone can help

I totally agree about the responsibility to care for your dog...but it seems there has been some head biting off going on here.

Hard times happen. Without a crystal ball...we do not know if and when we could be next in the welfare line. With the best of intensions "sh#& happens" it's called life. Many people in this country go without medical care for themselves let alone their pets because of no insurance and limited money. In fact poor people die on a regular basis because of no treatment or too late treatment for ailments that could have been treated with early intervention. The bottom line...unfortuantely in this country...money does buy life.
Sorry...Kinda got off on a tangent here...

Anyway my point is this guy came here for help. He IS trying!

Added comment...I may be going out on a limb here but...

Question for all...Any of you out there ever had a sore or injuried something or other yourself and chose to wait and see if the natural healing process would take care of it?? I know I have. I believe, this is common especially if you are unexpectedly left with no insurance or had a life event that has severly altered your income.

My point being let's not crawl down this guys throat for asking for advise before rushing to the Vet because his dog has a sore leg.

Glad that you got your dog to the vet.
Did the vet do an x-ray of the knee? or just feel around? Why did he prescribe antibiotics if they think it's a sprain?

The knee should be x-rayed if it does not get better. At 9 years of age...OS (bone cancer) or a torn cruciate could be the problem. Many people here start with their dogs having a limp, and the vet saying it's a sprain....when the limping continues.....then a diagnosis of OS is finally made later.
Please keep this in mind.

Gina

So true Gina..........
Samson's Dad, so glad you were able to get him looked after and the news was a treatable condition. Do keep in mind Gina/Brunie's Mom's post though...and be pro-active.

Please don't take me wrong. We have moved coast to coast 4 times in 11 years. We have never taken our pets for granted. They ARE a huge part of our life. We have never said "Oh we are moving and can't take our pets" like you see SO many people so please, don't assume we are not responsible pet people. We spent over $1500 on our daughter's cat that I tube fed every 2 hrs (daughter was at work and it was over Christmas on top of it) - if we DIDN'T care, our beloved cat would have been euthanized. She went into chronic liver failure due to a home renovation. The cat is heading into being 11 yrs old and doing well BTW.

At some point, some of us realize, as much as we love this pet, it is a pet. As they tug at our hearts, sometimes a choice must be made inspite of all the factors. I am sorry that not everyone sees things that way or understands where I am coming from when I say that.
Respectfully Yours
