Talking Nutrition after over feeding

My Smokie was growing too fast. I have cut his food. My question is

If a pup is too big for his age is it better to feed him little until he is closer to the recommended weight for his age, is there any danger of malnutrition?

Or should i feed him a normal amount of food? Which would mean him remaining a few kgs heavier than he should be until he stops growing?

I know that i wrote English, i dont know if i got my point across! Thanks!!

Re: Nutrition after over feeding

Does the vet say that he is a good weight for his age? I mean, is weight in line with the height he is currently at?

Re: Nutrition after over feeding

At 5 months he is 28.4kgs and the recommended weight is 30kg

So at the minute he is pretty good, he looks fine, im just not sure whether to follow the chart to the letter or to keep him slightly underweight.

He also has mild dysplasia, so i think he is better a bit under than over, but i also dont want his to be malnourished.

Re: Nutrition after over feeding

With the HD I would go for slightly underweight but so long as you are feeding quality kibble or a good RAW diet, you shouldn't have to worry about malnutrition.

I for one find that the what those body condition charts say is and ideal body condition is a little overweight for a very active dog. My guy, according to those pictures, would be underweight but he's got energy to spare , has a healthy coat and is generally quite healthy so I don't think he's malnourished at all!

Re: Nutrition after over feeding

Your pup is already 61lbs. That is slightly higher than the norm in a general sense. Puppies should be gaining roughly 10lbs per month, so at 5 months, he should weigh somewhere around 50lbs. Don't follow the recommended weight.

With HD, you definitely don't want him heavy. Keep him lean. At the moment, he sounds a bit overweight, so decrease the amount of food you give.
