Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Tiny update because the clinic is closed and we cant see my Sas, but the vet tech called just a sec ago and said that when she got to the clinic this am Sas was sitting up and wagging her tail at her....I am silently screaming YESSSS!......but I am cautious....no vomiting or diarrhea through the night but her temp goes down to 99.7 at night and back up to 100.3 this am....weird....not sure why....anyways, they will be there til 12-1pm to give her her noon meds and the vet will be in and out all day and we will hear from them again around 6.....please keep up the positive thoughts and prayers....

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

I believe Miss Sassy has just made it over the first, and most ominous, hurdle.

Now.......next challenge is to back her off the meds and back on to liquids and food. I don't think you named her Sassy for nothin'!

A slight fluctuation in body temperature is completely normal.....even without exercise. Her fluctuation is LESS than 1 degree! I would not worry about that one bit!

When you see her next, I'll bet if you look carefully, you will see a spark in her eye that hasn't been there this past week. That's the first best sign a worried Mom could hope for, and might be all she can give you besides a nub wiggle still.....because all her energy is going to internal healing (as it must) and that's exhausting. Soon as she is healed enough inside, you will start to see your Sweet Sassy coming back to you.

Awesome! Yea, I figured she just doesnt have any energy....I could picture me with vomiting and diarrhea for a week, then add to that not eating for a week, and I can only imagine how week I would be....thanks so much for all your words of wisdom and I will update again this evening after I talk to the vet!

Congrads!!! Your girl is living up to her name!! Just keep postive and she will be home in no time. Just rember her tummy is going to be upset so go easy on food. My boy would only lap the cearal and liquid for 2 days he wouldn't even eat the can food the vet gave me. But he did eat the ALS dry. What a smart boy he is.

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Hey;;
I'm praying for you.
How is your sweet little Sassy doing??
Is she okay? Parvo is a nasty thing and i hope my Rotts will never have it.
I'd be so heart broken if they did.
I'd cry every night untill they got better.
How is she doing??

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Evening update time.......vet tech called and said that tonight her temp is 100.7 (normal) and that normally her temp goes down when they check it at night but tonite it is staying good....also, they gave her 20cc of rebound that she kept down and she said she was going to try her on 2-3 tablespoons of purina EN (i think thats what she said)....a high calorie mushy dog food....she said she would call if she threw it up....no call so far....she said she was leaving around 8pm......also no diarrhea today and she only vomited when they gave her the cephazaline (she does this EVERY time she gets this)....vet tech also said that her vomit has more texture...its not so gooey.....hopefully this is the beginning of the long road home!! Oh, my Sassy is VERY crate trained and I have been telling them that from day 1 (every time they tell me she hasnt had any diarrhea or urine, but they were convinced she was so sick that she would have no control) so she says today "ive noticed that she wont pee in her cage, but every time I let her out to clean her cage she pees." Thats also when she had all the diarrhea -when she was out of her cage.....I was like DUH! Ive been trying to tell them that all week and wonder if thats why she has had such a hard go at this because she has been holding it ALL DAY til she just cant anymore....most of her diarrhea was overnight.....Anyways, please keep up positive thoughts and prayers!

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Parvo attacks rapidly dividing cells - that's why puppies are so hard hit by it and also why in young puppies their heart is also affected. The most rapidly dividing cells are in the small intestine (specifically the villi - hair like protrusions that increase the surface area to the size of a tennis court! )

The difference between diarrhea that can be held and that which can't is determined not only by the severity of it, but also where it originates. Diarrhea that originates in the small intestine, a dog can hold. If it originates in the large intestine, they have no control and cannot hold it at all. So, it makes sense to me that Sassy could hold it, and I wouldn't worry too much about that part of it making the disease worse (other than great compassion for how uncomfortable it would be for her). If it was bad enough, she wouldn't have been able to hold it, crate trained or not.

I did get Bamboo to cross his paws, LOL. I'm gonna request that he do it again in hopes it will help Sassy keep that EN down.

I guess we can say "no news is good news" since she didn't call! Bamboo says "Thanks" and also that he expects to be paid in sardines. He's a very cool cat - very "Garfield" like. Just ask Chili!

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Yes, no news IS good news because she said she would NOT call if she kept it down! She said it was going to be hard to let my Sas go because she has a HUGE place in her heart from the last 8 days! Its so nice to hear that they love her there ALMOST as much as we love her here! I am also ordering you to give that cat some sardines! LOL
