Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

I am so sorry you and Sassy are having to go through this. I have no experience with parvo, but I want to just send a 'get well soon' to Sassy, and a hang in there and a hug to you.

You know, after bearing 120 hours of pure stress, anyone would wonder if they were thinking right. If her WBC's are up that IS a good sign..you are not delirious about that.

It is terrible to see your dog go through that, but every single dog that has survived has gone through something similar. If her labs are looking better, then take that as a good sign. The disease takes its toll, but if she can pull through, she can regain her strength and her health. From what you've said, I feel hopeful and I'm still pulling for her.

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Another update.....I went to see Sas today and she lifted her head to see me and then just let me love on her....when I played with her legs she kinda pulled em away from me....the vet said that she was sitting up in her cage this am but it takes alot out of her to get up and move around so that they can clean her cage.....vet said that there were a couple positives today....when he felt her tummy today (they do this every day to check for introseppsus sp?) that she didnt throw up and normally she does right after they push on her....also he said that she took a snap at him today....I said WHAT? that is not in her nature at all....he said it was no big deal and she probably associates him with hurting her but that the fact was that she had never offered to even growl at him before and that today she wanted to let him know to back off was a positive as well.....I will go back to see her tonight and there will be a different vet for the weekend (other vet assured me that she would be able to get ahold of him by cell whenever she needed to and he expected to hear from her 5-6 times a day about my Sas)....anyways, continued prayers are appreciated....

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

So we went to see Sas this am....she always lifts her head when she hears me then she lays back down....she is still very weak.....the girls and the vet says she stands up and gets out of the cage when they clean it but i havent seen her us since tues.....her diarrhea today was more the color of her iv with just a small clot of blood....CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF THIS IS NORMAL? or if their recovering parvo dog went through this....the vet said diarrhea could last another week, but that it would see less blood....also her labs are all normal now but she is still not able to keep anything down....her temp was 100.6 this am (up from 99.6 yest).....this is such a roller coaster.....she did snap her head around pretty quick when they gave her a shot of pain meds.....i dunno what to think......financially we prob need to make a decision monday or tuesday.......help

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

It sure sounds like she's on the road back to me! 100.6 is a NORMAL temp, and if her diarrhea is the color of the IV, it's because she's not able to digest properly yet, but NO BLOOD is a very good sign. She's going to be weak for awhile, but just showing INTEREST in anything at this point (even being poked by a needle ) is a very GOOD THING.

What are they trying to feed her? I'd take some jars of baby food chicken with you and let her lick it off your fingers. Tapioca is also a very soothing food for dogs (prepared with chicken broth and you could stir an egg in with it - NO sugar or milk). You can swirl baby food into the tapioca, also. Just coat your finger with it and let her lick it off to start - a very small amount. She's going to need a very bland diet for awhile so her intestinal tract can continue to heal. There's also a high calorie, low volume paste you can get called NutriCal. Ask your vet about this.

Is she still on an IV?

Yes....she is still getting all kinds of meds and such through the IV....plus vitamins....you know the norm with parvo pups.....anyways, I want to say that its good but everytime I try to make myself see good, I get bad news....GRRRRR.......i am HOPING BEYOND HOPING that she will make progress tomorrow although I dont know if they will even TRY any by mouth fluids because the hosp is not open...the techs and vet go in to see the animals and do treatments....I really really want to believe the bloody diarrhea is gone....<PRAYING> that it is gone.....is it ok for her to have baby food if she isnt tolerating liquids yet? When they give her by mouth things she throws them up...sometimes 45 min later...sometimes 2 hrs....it just depends.....

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

I am so sorry about your sweet girl. I have a boy who got parvo at 7months he too had had puppy shots and still got it. I took him to the vet the day he had stoped eating.(not normal for him.) They alowed me to take him home and medcatie him at home they gave him anti. and vomiting meds. I gave him fluids every two hours around the clock he would not eat anything at all. I tryed everything I could find then I remered that the first thing you gave to a baby, was rice cearal. So I mixed that with unflavored pedylight very thin like a broth. And he took it in and kept it in !!! If she is drinking that is a good thing.Hydration is key right know. I do know that the manufacture of the VX will help cover some of the cost of treatment if not all. So contact the company and the breeder. I know what you are going through and it really sucks when your baby is sick. Please keep hope alive. My boy did come through parvo and is very healthy now and 16 months old.
Best wishes to you and your sweet little girl.

~hugs & more hugs~
Teresa

I know. I call what you're going through a slow motion panic attack - you want to hurry up and see her better, but you can't DO anything to speed it up. My heart is with you.

You'll need to clear it with the vet and others who are treating her. I wouldn't try to give her anything without their go-ahead. When you do get it, those are two foods that are very easy on her system, and she's going to need that type of therapy in order to start eating again, as she'll still have a lot of internal healing to do before she's back on track.
