Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Well.....another update! I went to pick up my Sassy to transfer her back to the critical care clinic for the night and they looked at me like I was crazy!!! They said that they don't let parvo dogs go home on IVs....I explained to them that I was under the impression that I was supposed to transfer her back to the critical care clinic at night and they said that I was more that welcome to take her back there but that STABLE parvo dogs stay there to recover!!! Isnt that awesome news? I know we are not out of the woods yet and tonight is a big night for my sweet Sassy but I doubt that the vet would say she was stable unless she was....right?!?!? She still is not taking anything by mouth, but her poops look a little more brown and less bloody....still VERY watery......please keep us in your thoughts and prayers! This is a big night for us because she will be alone at the hospital from 9pm until 630am. I am a little scared!

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Wow.....you guys are really lucky!!!

One of the emergency vets here in Edmonton told me once that Parvo is nearly always fatal in pups of her age.

She had lots of angels on her side this week.....

Continued prayers for her continued recovery!!!

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Ok....so we went to see her and they use the time that we see her to clean her cage and while she was out of the cage she had a MAJOR blowout and it was really smelly! The doctor gave her more ABT (something different to help prevent a secondary infection) and more nausea meds....I feel really down tonight after all that went on while we were there...this is day 3 and I expected this to be a bad day....hoping for better news in the am......

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

One of the girls that I work with got a pup(this was several years ago). He is mastiff(dad) and rottie/pit/bulldog(mom). Her son's neighbors dog had pups. LONG story, but this person was an awful owner. Jamie just went over and took the mom and all the pups home with her. The pups were 8 weeks old so she found homes for all 6 of them and the mom too. She decided to keep a little brindle boy. 3 days after rescuing them all she found out they had parvo. Simon the little boy she kept was the only suvivior. He had a long battle being so young but he made it. He is now a very heathly 3 year old 110lb boy. No ill affects.

Sending support for you and your girl. She WILL pull through this:)

I'm sorry to hear about a "blowout". I was hoping to read good news.
Do a google search and a search here on Parvaid. It's worked wonders on some dogs with parvo.

I hope things get better.

Is this a by mouth thing? I was reading up on it and was wondering if I should even try it because they havent been giving her anyting by mouth because she is still vomiting.

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

I went to see Sassy this am again because I miss her like crazy and we had such a bad visit yesterday. I cried most of the night and woke up thinking about her. I went to the clinic and they said they had just had her out to clean her cage and she was back in the crate and laying down....she looked soooo worn out I couldnt help but to cry for her.....she acknowleged that I was there and just looked at me......I am so frustrated that I am not seeing drastic improvements.....the girl said that she didnt look worse to her and that she was probably just really worn out because of moving her around to clean her cage....I realize that she has not eaten for 5-6 days now and that she is weak and trying to fight this thing, but how much longer do I have to see her in agony?? :( This REALLY SUCKS! Thanks for letting me vent.....going to see her again this afternoon......

I'm thinking it's something mixed with I.V fluid?
I copied this from the website:

Suggested use for Parvo: Mix with electrolyte fluid (or Amber Technology’s Oat Water recipe found in Amber Technology’s Self Help Guide To Treating Your Dog with Parvo). Give every 15 min. for the first hour. Then every hour after until the puppy has eaten on its own (and held down food for 6 hours). Once the puppy is eating, give 4 times a day for 2 days to prevent a relapse.

It's too bad the vet did not start with Parvaid right at the beginning. If it was me...I would get some ASAP!!! It will not hurt...but if it can help..it would be great.

Re: Our Sweet Sassy Has Parvo!?!?

Well...Sassy had a really bad night and temp is a little subnormal and she is VERY weak still....I had "the talk" with the vet who said that they are treating her like one of their own and that they will let me know when they think enough is enough.....I have been sitting here all day thinking about my poor girl and really wondering if it is time.....I hate to see her in agony....so I asked vet to run more labs and she suggested we start plasma.....I say ok lets give it a go.....she starts the plasma a few hrs ago and then the cell rings....its the vet ofc....I always wonder if I am going to get "THE" call....matter of fact I dread EVERY am (my Sassy stays at the hosp alone from 9pm to 6am)....so I answer the call and vet says that she is actually sitting up in the cage (she has been horizontal for 2 days) and is looking at the vet like "man my stomach hurts".....vet tells me that WBCs are back to within normal range (they had been down to 2.3 and now up to 9).....and that most of her labs look pretty normal except that she is a little anemic and creatinine is a lil low....normal since she has been bleeding for 5 days....anyways, they also force fed her some rebound (milky looking electrolye stuff) and some dextrose to help stimulate tummy to start healing....she threw up a couple hrs later, but vet said it wasnt the rebound....it was the normal gastic stuff....so here is where I am.....I know parvo tries to kill off the WBCs so that she cant fight it so if her body is actually making WBCs is this a good thing, or just me looking for any sign to keep trucking.....I am rather depressed and ended up sobbing to the vet today....sigh.....my body is tired....I cant imagine what my Sas feels like....any advice is great! thanks
