I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have an 8 month old male that is acting strangely. We got up early this morning, he ate his breakfast, went outside as usual, came back in, and all appeared to be fine. After a few hours he and our yorkie went out again to play in the backyard. They were out for probably an hour playing, and I checked on them a few times during that hour. I just let them in and noticed something was wrong with the rottweiler. He LOVES to drink water. More than food, I swear. Always overindulges when he drinks! He went over to his bowl, but did not drink. Went back over a few more times to look and nothing. I took him there myself and told him to "take it", he tried, but only could manage a couple of shallow licks. I can tell he wants water, but doesn't seem to be able to drink it. Then I asked him for "kisses" about twenty times to no avail. He will normally get up from a nap and come over to lick your whole face if you say "give me kisses". He tried, but ended up nibbling my nose and lips, because there was no tongue coming out. I am really worried. Maybe he is having an anaphalactic reaction to something and his tongue might be swollen??? He is acting as though he doesn't feel well. His nub barely wags at all. I just gave him a benadryl. Any ideas? I called the emergency vet, they said we could monitor him for a few hours then see about bringing him in. Also, we have a mediterranean fan palm in the backyard that he chewed on a few days ago, but it doesn't appear that he has gone back for more. It does have really big thorns on the branches. From what I can tell it is not poisonous like the sago. I was also think about a snake bite or ants or something??? Please, any insight would be helpful. I am very worried.

Re: Allergic reaction??? Is he doing any gagging at all? Likes he is going to vomit but nothing comes up? If so, I would be very concerned that he's bloating and if that's the case, it's a true medical emergency as in get to the vet THIS MINUTE. Actually from what you've posted, I'd get him to the emergency vet immediately in any case.

Re: Allergic reaction??? He is not gagging. However, I forgot to mention he had some mucous-like saliva hanging from his mouth, I think this is probably due to not being able to swallow very well. His breathing seems to be fine. I am watching him like a hawk. He is laying beside me. The benadryl has made him very sleepy, I assume.

| Re: Allergic reaction??? if this was anaphalaxis, things would be progressively worse VERY quickly. drooling is another sign of nausea or irritation in his mouth. Could a thorn have been lodged in his mouth? I wouldn't;t wait and take him to emerg. ASAP

Re: Allergic reaction??? Well, good news. I took Max to the emergency vet. Apparently, he did have some facial and oral swelling. Everything else physically was fine though. The vet said he most likely was stung by an insect and was having a reaction. They gave him an injection of antihistamine and another shot, too. They said he will be fine! Thank goodness! Also, after my last post, he threw up due to him trying to eat a treat and an ice cube (I don't think he could get them down and it triggered the gag reflex). The vomit had several droplets of bright red blood. The vomitting and blood are what made the trip to the vet a clear one! I took a sample of vomit with me. The vet said the fresh blood in the vomit was most likely due to him rupturing a capillaryin his throat or esophagus because of the force of the vomitting. Just FYI in case anyone else has this situation come up. Thanks again for your help.
