Carter torn acl

My 4 year old male Carter went to the vet today because hes was holding his back leg up. The Dr. said that he was about 90% sure it is a torn acl. He is going back on friday for x-rays,but I was wondering what these surgeries run. He is around 115 lbs.He was saying it is going to be around 3500-4000 for this.Is one surgery better that the other?Any help would be great.

Re: Carter torn acl

My boy had the same thing... well... a partial CCL tear. We talked it over with our vet and decided on TPLO. Although more invasive, much higher success rate. It's been almost 3 months now and he's just about as good as new. 3500-4000 is a little much. Mine was 2700 with 1 follow up visit included. Then another 150 for an xray on 2/19 to make sure all was well. Good luck! It's heartbreaking while they're confined for 8+ weeks.

Oh yeah... and my vet told me to prepare myself for the other to eventually go too.

Re: Carter torn acl

Both of my girls have torn there ACL and had repair. Greta had the ACL repaired the spring of 2005-that surgery was $1500, then spring of 2006 she was having similar trouble--no weight bearing same leg, took her in and the cartilage in that leg needed repair-that was $1000. Last spring Fozzy tore her ACL, but this time the vet said they have started repairing the cartilage at the same time if there is any sign of damage because it is very common for a dog to have trouble with the cartilage a year after ACL repair. Anyway, the cartilage was also damaged so he repaired both for a combined cost of $1500. Our girls were restricted for 4 months--after the ACL repair--seemed like forever. After Greta's cartilage repair it was only 8 weeks.

My vet said the same thing. Knock on wood. So far that hasn't happened.
